Ellie, for that, I apologise....I'm not completely "logical" always and tend to get a little "passionate" myself.

and--dont know about now--but in our time there --locals including our Portuguese friends/workforce--were "in fear" of the local authorities/Camara --really intimidated--have things improved I wonder--anyone know?

This makes me very angry
People should NEVER be intimidated by the people they are paying to look after their interests!

Whats the point of a "democracy" if the people are stifled-after all --

EXACTLY!

theydidnt get a vote or a say in whether they joined the Euro--but come to that neither did the Dutch :!:

...and neither will we, I suspect! but, that's a whole 'nuther matter, I'm afraid.

Some of my sons Dutch friends (young students)were angry about this and want their Gilda back---others were apathetic---apathy is big enemy--and can let forces of extreme in

Exactly, if you don't vote, you don't have a say.

-------so youre right in that people "should" stand up and let their voices be heard :!:

Absolutely! I'm all for getting out there and rattling the cages of the self important, but utimately democratically elected "functionaries" that make these decisions. I went from being a complacent "non-voter", to being a thorn in the side/royal pain in the arse, community spokesman against our borough council. We didn't win the particular case, but they now know that there are people out there watching 'em, and ready to take 'em on, it makes a difference.

Considering how much you care, perhaps the best thing you could do for your friends in the Algarve is to motivate them to stand up, en mass, to these horrible little "grey men" who are making decisions, on their behalf, without regard for the welfare of "the locals"

I'm sorry to clutter up the forum with this "rant", but I would have emailed Ellie had I had her addy.

Peace, man :D

Ps. The formatting above appears to be a bit mangled (sp?), but I'm sure you get my drift!

Maddi, Ellie, am now "registered". Look forward to contributing to the madness here. I've actually been visiting this forum for a couple of years now, ever since our first visit to the Algarve, but haven't posted very much to date. Made up for it recently I guess!

confusion!

Is the last post you Uggie?
I thought it was you who were leading us on that route out of rat race? :? I hope it is :!:
when you spoke of those "men in grey suits" --local authorities?
When I lived there--they looked more like the Mafia!
Leather jackets hanging from shoulders-eyes covered by dark shades--grim to look at---our workforce/friends were frozen to the spot when they put in an appearance-----Ive told of one of my confrontations with them on "Ellies Corner"--called "Left in Charge"------upsetting to see decent people intimidated in such a way.
But I never found out"why"? They would just say they were afraid;didnt like them --and then stay silent---------
I keep hoping someone will come on here and (hopefully) tell me things are different today :?:
Have a nice day :)

Yeah, that was me Ellie, I thought I'd completed the registration exercis, but apparently not

Men in grey suits - local authorities? Yep, but I was using the British variety as the example....my mistake.

Sadly, the types you mention are still all too prevelant in southern Europe, as is the bribery and corruption that keeps them in power
