OK, I'll own up. I am the one for whom Mike was asking about shops being open.
So, any snide or derogatory remarks should be addressed to me.
Mike was being helpful inasmuch as he knew that when we arrived in the village, late on Christmas Eve, all the shops would be closed, and that without some basic foods at least we were facing a miserable Christmas dinner. So, he asked a very simple question - will there be any shops open?
Thanks for trying Mike. Sorry about the flack you got from 'guests' who seem content to criticise but cannot do it in a polite or constructive way.
I wonder what the 'guest' would do if he/she was unable to do any Christmas food shopping until Christmas Day? Methinks they'd be out in the car looking for a shop that was open!

So, you live in Portugal, do you? Do you live in the or near the village? If the answer to these questions is Yes. here's one more . . .Anonymous wrote:i once again ask to which no one has answered ..how did people survive for decades without commercial firms being closed not just for one day but three or four. why not try it or has shopping in england now become so additive that you cannot do without it for one day.
Can we come to your house for Christmas dinner because we will be arriving very late on Christmas Eve and we'll not have any food to eat on Christmas Day?
btw, can I reserve a drumstick?
