Wouldn't a comparison be the Health Centre (Centro de Saude) in Lagoa? They speak some English (if you at least try to speak a bit of Portuguese) and there are female doctors. To be honest I don't understand how you can expect any more.
Off topic a little bit but.... Does anybody know if the 12-13 year old girls (local & expat) will be given the vaccination for the hpv virus next year? The U.K. has finally caught up with rest of europe but has Portugal?

I have had reason to visit Dr Ken in the past and I must say he was very kind and considerate. His wife, who is the receptionist was also very welcoming and considerate. Both spoke very good English and would deffinately use again. Actually his surgery is attacheded to our apartment block in CVO so very handy for us as we are neighbours.

I don't know about that one but I can tell you that in Portugal children get more vaccinations than in the UK.
