GETTING PORTUGUESE CAR TAX WHEN IN BRITAIN

Hi all. We are in Scotland for a bit with our Port. car. I know the car tax time is coming up and we won't be there. Does anyone know EXACTLY what we are supposed to do to get this? I have had conflicting advice, and would really like to keep on the good side of the law! Can anyone help? Thanks.

You need internet access and online banking to do it the easy way.The car tax is available on line now but you need to be registered on the Financas website http://www.e-financas.gov.pt/de/jsp-dgci/main.jsp. When you then log on you will see Ultimas Novidades and under that a clickable link Liquidacao/Pagamento for IMV for 2007. Your own car automatically comes up, you tick the box. Make sure pop ups are allowed on your browser. A new page appears with a number. Print this off you then go to your online banking and use this number to pay the tax. Within a couple of weeks the stamp should arrive at your Portuguese address

There is usually a two month window to buy. If in Portugal you can still go to the Financas dept as usual.

To Al Garb, further to my post on the IPO test and at risk of slightly hi-jacking this post, do you know how you would get on if your Portuguese registered car is out of the country and the IPO test expires? Presumably your insurance would become invalid. Sorry Avvie, but probably of interest and relevance to you also.

Sorry; don't have the definitive answer on that other than I have Portuguese car insurance and have never been asked it I have a valid IPO when I've taken it out.....but I'm sure the small print mentions roadworthy though
