FREE TO AIR SATELLITE KIT

Since Portuguese TV is so poor, I want a cheap solution for getting alternate channels for our holiday home in Lagos.

Don't want any monthly fee, just want to install some kit for a one off fee

Don't want a "semi legal" sky box ( and I don't have Sky at home in UK)

So I was wondering about some kind of FREE TO AIR SATELLITE kit. They had some in Mestre Maco last year, but dish was small, so I assume wouldn't work in Lagos.

Anyone know of anyhting suitable - and is it a DIY proposition for a reasonably handy jack of all trades?

We too looked at the " Macro " and other 80cm dishes, the only english speaking channels available are exactly the same as you get on portuguese cable TV .
BBC Prime, BBC world news Sky News, thats about it.

If you do not want sky then go for Freesatm you will still need a 150cm dish, Freesat box and card, but no subscriptions, all your normal UK chaneels.

Sorry, I'm being a bit dim...

Is Freesat still a form of Sky system, but without a subscription.

If so, how is this different to the Macro type systems you mention - will they pick up other satellite signals?

Where can you get a Freesatm system and how much will it cost? is it easy to install or will we need to get a man in? When you say you can get all the usual Uk channels do you mean the basic 5 channels?

Not sure if this is the same as we have - There is a large sat dish on our roof belonging to the bar downstairs. We have a feed from this to our apartment, and purchased a freeview box from the electronics place in Estrada do Farol (can't remember the name but I know someone will know it!)

This gives me free tv viewing, loads of channels bbc1, 2, 3, 4, ITV 1, 2, 3, CBBC, CITV, News 24, CNN etc etc.

This is the system, You will need to buy a FREESAT BOX, approx £100 and card ( not sure of price ).
Then install the dish ( 1.5mtr ).

Do not know of any other non subscription system that will get you all the above channels.

Tecnica were great - they came to see it in the morning, and had the whole thing up and working by lunchtime. Admittedly the sat dish was already there, but they had to move it (as I kept walking into it!) and add more wiring to get the feed to our apartment. Excellent service.

Completion of our villa is getting closer and we are now starting to put our budget together for the finishing touches.

How much should we build in for the installation of a dish etc.
We may bring a freesat box and card with us but happy to scource this locally as part of the package if reasonably priced.

Pleased you're getting closer to completion! Tecnica installed our system over two years ago, and did a great job. Can't remember the cost, but it seemed very reasonable at the time. Would suggest that you buy the digibox and freeview card from them. The system requires a phone call back to Sky, and they have a the equipment to do this. All obviously totally legal.
