where to take mother?

A good evening to you all,
i was thinking of taking the mother out to cvo in october , is it a bit cooler then ,as she's not a big fan of the heat . apart from silves castle could anyone recommend a good place to visit , as she likes historical sites but doesnt like walking too much. please note it would have to be in taxi ride distance as i dont drive . thanks in advance.

I think taking the bus to Silves is pretty easy, just a change at Lagoa. Likewise, you can get a direct bus into Portimao and spend a day there. That's saved a couple of taxi fares.

The bus depot at Portimao has details of excursions, Monchique would be a good option and there are also river trips depending on the tide.

I think Silves castle would be a good place to take your mother, also maybe she would like to see the cork factory. As she dosen,t like it too hot perhaps she would like to sit under a sunshade with a nice cold drink and just people watch.

Don't forget in Silves as you go through the first gateway from the courtyard with the cafe and the fountain in the middle, if you then turn right when you go under the gateway there is a fantastic Museum, really well laid out and very good displays. Not boring at all.

silves castle would be a lovely visit, but it's a steep walk up and cobblestoned most of the way. Lagos might also be a good choice (but take the bus as it's a fair taxi journey away) and as laserblazer suggested Portimao is a great place for a day trip and most places are accessible from there.

I can recommend taking the train from Estombar, in either direction, to Lagos or Faro.

Very nice trip, at a reasonable price.

Jeremy, thats really good to know. Id like to try that when Im out in Sept. I wonder? Could I get a bus to Estombar from Carvoeiro? id love a trip into Lagos..and by train

For a nice day out the bus leaves CVO in the morning:

0745 - arrives Estombar 0806 Train from Estombar to Lagos Dep 0815 0r
0930 - Arrives Estombar 0951 Train from Estombar to Lagos Dep 1015

Connections not so easy on return , but regular trains in the afternoon to Estombar & a taxi would be very cheap to CVO.

[/quote]Yes forgot about the cork factory , so you have been there jacko ? is it far away and is their plenty to do for mother , like i say she doesnt care too much for walking far.

Also can anyone tell me, is the train really like that? The pictures make it look really nice, but I have heard the trains around the Algarve are quite grotty and horrible. I would like to take my kids on the train.

I thought it was the UK trains that were grotty. My experience of the Algarve trains is that they are ok. Not the height of luxury but clean.
