Mad Man
Mad Man
We were in CVO during carnival.
On both the last 2 days we saw a guy dressed in a beret, a shirt with "body glove" written on it ranting and shouting at everybody he passed.
He looked like Monsieur Le Clerc from "Allo Allo"
Anybody see him/ know who he is ?
Nice to see you are all now enjoying the weather we should have had by the way !!!!!!!!!!!1

Glasllwch, if its the fella with a marked limp, I think you must mean Antonio.
Ive actually had quite lucid conversations with him. But and its a big but, he shouldn't be drinking. Antonio had a terrible accident some years ago and fell from a building he was working on. Suffered very severe head injuries and smashed his leg..he did 'die' for a few minutes.
This is only what Ive been told by a German friend in CVO. That he has to take drugs for his pains and should not drink!
I can well understand your little un being alarmed. The drink makes him somewhat crazy and he shouts!!
He calls me 'Lagoa'
cos he knows thats where I once lived.
I think he is harmless, Ive never heard of him hurting anyone. Its when hes had a few he gets out of control and shouts a lot!
I feel rather sad about it.

I think it is the same chap. Sounds like he has his share of problems but that's no consolation to a frightened child. Oddly enough, when I last saw him in the square in July he'd got a load of kids following him around and dancing. The more they giggled the more he liked it. Sounds like he's a bit difficult to call with a drink in him.
I've always admired the apparent tolerance of Southern Europeans generally to people who are, would we say, challenged. There's the black guy who begs up at the shops in Monte Carvoeiro and who I've often seen on the sauce when I'm at the bakery early in the morning. Rarely up to a discussion on the Portugese political scene I'd guess. Also the bearded lady in Alvor who is there every time I visit scrounging fags (her that is, I don't smoke and anyway I wouldn't want to start a turf war).

Yes, it is Antonio. I think there is a certain level of tolerance and of course it isn't any consolation to a frightened kiddie. He frightened me once when he started shouting whilst I was eating and he was at the bar
But I have seen Antonio shouted at too..this is what happened..
I was in the square one evening watching a musical act on the stage. I was sitting on the sea wall enjoying seeing people dancing, when I saw a figure moving across the square towards me..it was Antonio.
He knows me well from dining in Colombos. He came up to me and said "Ola Lagoa", and shook my hand as usual. I was just asking him how he was, when a man at the side of me started shouting at him. It was all in rapid Portuguese so I didnt understand all of it but the man was telling him to go away and leave me alone..he was really shouting and having a go at him.
Of course, that started Antonio off and then the whole square was looking on! Then Antonio shuffled off.
I tried to tell the man that it was okay, that I knew Antonio and that he was doing no harm.
The man replied " He diodo(crazy)"
actually although this man was probably trying to 'protect ' me, I felt annoyed.
A bearded lady in Alvor? Ill have to watch out for her when I holiday there in Sept

Oh yes. I've met him. Last year when the square was dug up we arrived from the airport and headed straight into Sulley's for breakfast. We parked in the square and I headed for the pay machine. On the way I was intercepted by aforementioned man who told me that the machine was out of order and I had to pay him 2 Euros to park. I basically said "I'll check the machine" and lo and behold there was nothing wrong with it. I caught him muttering something to me and then he continued to find some more unsuspecting people. My son who was 9 at the time was pretty freaked out by it. Apparently it was another way of getting his beer money at 9.00amdestroyer wrote:. Then as we sat in Sulley's a youngish man came in, disappeared into the toilet and was gone for ages. The lady who was cooking breakfast didn't notice as she was in the kitchen. Then he came out and just stood by the bar staring at us...I mean just staring right at us without his eyes moving away which was so off-putting as I was trying to ram a large forkful of bacon into my chops.
Wasn't the best start to a peaceful holiday

Yes, Ive seen the fella operating in the parking lot.I did think at first, that he had a job as parking attendant. I wonder how many have been conned?
A friend of mine near CVO, who works for a church there, was sitting at Smilers one day having lunch. The black fella came and sat at her table and she spoke to him...then he started to eat her chips!
Taking pity on him she shared her meal and asked him his troubles, trying to help him..but I don't think she got anywhere

Is this the same Antonio that sings in the karaoke in the Round Up Saloon every night.I know that he lives in Lagoa. But he seems a perfectly nice chap.
