I came back from Carvoeiro on the 20th January and they had just started to relay all the paving outside Smilers and I understand it will go up to the newspaper stand on the hill, they started on the 15th January, the weather was beautiful and I suspect the cafes were fed up at losing a lot of trade.

The Square
The roadworks were because the road behind Martin's Grill was being dug up for some sort of connection. It was open again last night. There seem to be temporary road works all around, what with all the new construction in the area. Feels like living on a building site!
Locals
Give us a chance please... we have to live and work like everyone else!
Yes, there is a lot of work currently in progress, but it is so intense because there is a big push on to get it all finished before the season starts. Heavy construction work is prohibited during tourist season.
Roads have been dug up to facilitate water, drainage and electrical work.
Many of the bars and restaurants have been closed for annual holidays (remember most of them work eleven months on the trot) and refurbishment. Most of them are opening now as February rolls in.
It looks like chaos but is actually well co-ordinated.
A proper report will follow...

Digging the world
Digging up roads seems to be highly contageous!!! Seems half the west of Scotland is dug up just now as well. Anyone venturing around Glasgow will discover massive delays East bound on the M8 going out the city, with diversions that have you running in a circle where you eventually finish up exactly where you started. Going west bound to the airport you will find that you are stuck on the M8 flyover with a grandstand view of your flight to Faro taking off and still leaving you stuck, unable to do anything about it except kick a few cones.
Loch Lomond road fares no better, where they are digging up the good bits and leaving the desperate bits untouched.
Further up the road in Fort William they are also indulging in the winter sport of "pot holing" and creating more problems than solving.
I look forward to CVO in April where at least I can walk round the diggings in warmth and sunshine!
Simon.

cold as ice
Tis cold down here too, expecting snow 2morow,so big choice, snow ball fight or lots of red wine by the roaring fire(if I can get him to chop the wood)hint hint!! I know which one I shall choose.
blocked roads... congestion... cold weather... really makes me appreciate what we have here!
Red wine and log fires good here also!
There was gridlock in Carvoeiro this morning but only because a jeep was double parked outside the Oasis and a beer lorry couldn't pass.
Work is ongoing but getting there. Don't worry too much, it will get finished. Sure even if it doesn't, you can always grab a coffee and watch the progress when you all get out here!
Latest works related gossip... the jewellers shop near Hemingways has been gutted for refurbishment. It seemed like a good idea at the time until someone noticed that a supporting pillar/wall had been demolished and the upstairs apartments were in peril as they were no longer propped up.
