Processionary pine moths which inhabit pine trees are dangerous to the health of humans and deadly for animals.

Dear Guest,
Although I have some qualifications for gardening in UK I must admit to having only a small amount of knowledge regarding Mediterranean horticulture--you are referring to the ravage caused by Thaumetopoea pityocampa, the processionary caterpillar. Is there any remedy to this very nasty pest?
From my studies---of some time past--thought the only way to get rid was to prune out and destroy their nests. But if you have many trees --a very hard task to perform--and on no account touch these horrible pests as they are covered in very irritating hairs. Apparently--not even birds touch them--except one--the hoopoe!
Ive never actually seen any or the nests which are apparently ugly cobweb-like things-------
is it true--that they march in long single file processions--stripping off the pine needles?
Ive gone all "itchy" just writing this.I sympathise greatly with you--pine trees are a particular favourite of mine--I hope you get some professional help real soon and hope your trees can be saved from further damage.
Good luck! Ellie
