Tremors ? !

Post by Ellie »

Have just read on the Silves-Messines site that there have been couple strongish earth tremors in the region? Think it said one in Portimao on Saturday? 4.5
and another felt in the Silves area yesterday?
Anyone experience these?
From my own past experience ( a 4.sumfin) years ago, that the sea got very rough afterwards?

Don't know about Portugal, but I thought I felt one yesterday in Grimsby! Maybe it was just me!

The 4,5 felt in Portimão was on 10.08 off the Moroccan coast.

Thats interestin Biffa.. oh and thanks for the graph :) I seem to recall you mentioning in a News Letter once, that there are very mild ones almost daily that we don't feel..and that its a sort of safety valve?
I had another look on Silves site and its thought the one felt there could have been 'dynamite' being used on site for new golf course?
We only experienced one in our time there, and it was quite strong, the whole apartment block shook for a few minutes..H reckoned he heard 'noise' too at the time.
Misty said she felt one in Grimsby and we do get occassional tremors here in UK don't we?
Wasn't there one about 2 years ago that shook the midlands and was felt as far as London?

something definetely on the move i live in porches and suddenly over the last week or so half my doors in the villa dont open properly. One door dropping is a pain in the whatever , but all doors in the house , thats an earth tremor. Same happened a couple of years ago when we lived in land , all the door frames moved and the doors wouldnt open or close properly. So thats a yes to earth tremors in Porches.!!!

Got back to the Algarve today and I was so relived to be home :)
There was a tremor here wasn't there, just before Christmas 2004? It was an earthquake just off the coast and a fair one at that. It was just before the big tsunami and it was after that we learned there had been a similar tsunami in Portugal, closer to Lisboa (I think) many years ago, but they do happen around here too.

the most famous tsunami was in 1755 (almost sure) and destroyed lisbon, most of which was rebuilt. i think it hit the algarve aswell. Its a scary thought!

How do we find out if there was an "official tremor"? My patio developed an unexplained crack last week, and it would be nice to claim on my insurance. and I pay an earthquake supplement on my insurance.

Tremor

Another one yesterday measuring 3.1 at 15.28 about 25 kms SW of Albufeira.

Interesting point about insurance. Be careful as many Portuguese policies have a very high "excess" clause for earthquake damage, some as much as 5% of the claim! Thus if you had a big claim you would end up having to pay a large amount yourself.

Upheaval of pool terraces are a common problem with tremors. Go to webpage at

http://web.meteo.pt/pt/sismologia/sismObservGeral.jsp

and see if the date of the damage coincides with a close tremor.

I was in the bathroom and my husbands shaving gel moved across the marble suface. I though it was strange as there was no water on the marble. I assumed it was a tremor.
