when I asked at barclays here last year I was told they are not linked to uk therefore you cant write a barclays uk cheque here and get it cashed
try banco espirito santo...been with them 15 years and they are very very efficient and if I write to uk on say a monday the money is in the account here within 5 or 6 days (even allowing for the letter to arive)

Don't think there is any bank in UK & Portugal which will 'double' up for transactions in both countries though.

BANIF do non resident mortgages and are keen to lend to non residents . Their agency in Lagoa is very good. They have online banking and an English version website.
I have an association with them and can introduce you if you wish which may help a bit?

Agree that if you want a Portuguese account, Millenium in CVO offer excellent service. The two girls that work there have endless patience with someone like me, showing me how to write cheques etc. As for a UK bank. if you are not getting good service, change. I'm with NatWest and find their online banking very easy to use.

We have been with Millenium in CVO since we arrived here 6 years ago and cannot speak too highly of them.
Joao, the manager, and Isobel, the senior clerk, are locals and will give you every possible help.
Once they get to know you sterling cheques are credited within 3 days, and they will help with mortgages for estrangeiros.
