Does anyone know if you can buy antibiotics over the counter (i.e. without a prescription) in the local chemists?

Yes, I managed to buy 2 packs of antibiotics last year without prescription, but it was at a chemist in the next village (Lagoa) not Carvoeiro.

I asked at the Pharmacia the last time we visited and was told no. However, ventolin puffers can be purchased quite cheaply OTC in Portugal.

Yeah, been told about that Alan..but also that its 'expensive'?
I got mine on prescription, when I was ill, in September. But I needed a diagnosis and to be sure that I didn't have anything seriously wrong.
I wouldn't take a risk with just buying OTC if I was quite ill (which I was). See a doctor to be sure..especially if you have pains.

Officially you cannot buy antibiotics without a prescription but some chemists will sell them to you, particularly if you say that you are already taking them on your doctor's advice.

If you go to the centro de saude in Lagoa you can see a doctor for €3.40 or so and get a prescription. A private doctor's consultation will set you back 35 to 45 euros.

Just come back from your part of the UK as my youngest graduated from Canterbury University on Tuesday, WOW what a setting for a Graduation, the Cathedral and all the pomp and ceremony it was amazing. Kent is also very pretty, I love the Oast houses and the brick and wood old houses.

Sorry also meant to mention that after a holiday we had staying in Benagil about 4 years ago I like to be prepared!!! After four days of our holiday my husband went down with Malaria ( he had travelled to South Africa about 6 weeks before) he spent the rest of the holiday in the Hospital Particular in Alvor

The 'Malaria' thing can be pretty bad can't it? Has Mike been okay since?
My cousin (who lived in Zimbabwe most of his life), contracted Malaria..and had bouts throughout his life. But maybe theres better control of it now?
Thats handy to know about clinic in Lagoa. Im wondering, is it the place, down that street just past the Chinese restaurant?
When I was ill in Sept. I paid 30 euros for doctor and about 12 or so for couple lots of medication. Going to a clinic would be easier on the purse strings..
Though I must say, Dr Veira is very good.

Hi Ellie, yes he does still have bouts of illness, although not full blown malaria, especially when he is tired or gets a cold.

We are so very proud of her.....she got a 1st class honours degree, as you know she had a bad year last year and another set back this year, all I can say is 'what a girl'

Our eldest daughter was ill a couple of years ago with tonsillitis and we went to the German Doctor in Carvoeiro cost 60 euros and the drugs on top!!!

I say,that doctors bill was very steep !

Ive been to Dr Vieira in CVO, the Dutch doctor, a couple of times and hes very nice..that price included a letter for insurance.
Hopefully none of us will need a doc on our hols,but you never know!
