Fresh fruit n Veg

This may seem like a bizzare question...but...where is the best place to buy really good quality fresh fruit and veg, Supermarkets or Markets??? I have been to the algarve many times and altho the fruit and veg seems good in the restaurants etc...the supermarket stuff is a bit iffy !!

Hope someone can help !!

You mean because the toms are not perfectly round etc? I find Pt veg tastes much better than UK stuff, give it a try.

Nooooooo...when i have gone to supermarkets LOTS of the veg and fruit seems to be quite low quality...some on display were even mouldly..and that was in a BIG supermarket in Faro !! Yeeka !!!

Usually in the markets, but some of the supermarkets have good produce and often it is more convenient to buy there. Driving along you can sometimes get fruit and vegetables, in season, from stalls at the side of the road. Just been out this morning picking tomatoes, all shapes and sizes but taste superb

The local municipal market has excellent fruit & veg' stalls, the fish stalls are great (they gut, scale & clean them for you) & there is a very good butcher, baker & deli' there aswell. It is on the road that runs up beside restaurant a Velha Lanterna - Rua do Cerro, on restaurant hill - Estrada do Farol. Only open in the mornings though.

I agree Ellen..I usually buy at the little supermercado( never remember the name), as you go from Smilers on the out road,the first store? and the veg/salad always seems nice & fresh......and I never enjoy salads so much, as those I make on hol there!
Ellen,that sounds great...out picking fresh tomatoes this morning. Now that is FRESH !

Ive not tried the Municipal market yet..but will definitely now, after Blue's recommendation

Yes I agree the Municipal Market is good particularly for fruit, veg and fish and in the summer they have a little cafe with tables outside where you can have something to refresh you after the walk up the hill. I think it opens at 8am and closes at 1pm Monday til Saturday

Yes Ellie the tomatoes are lovely and the plums too - very juicy

If you want a huge town market, try the one in Portimao. It is closer to the hospital and Modelo on the west side of town. It is in a building on three levels. First is the vegetables, fruits and flowers, second level has the meats and the top level is all the seafood. Everything is fresh, If you are not interested in buying; just go there to see. I believe it is on every morning. Terrific place.

Thanks to all that have replied. Guess I have been looking in the wrong place..ie the BIG supermarkets!!! So I will just need to get up early

and toddle down to the market to get my fresh provisions. Thanks again

Sounds good Hoser..Ill have to pay a visit there on my autumn trip, I like Portimao,specially the harbourside.

Hey Ellen, you lucky thing, I just adore plums,really do. I like to pick them, then pop 'em in mouth...gorgeous

Have you tried a French plum tart? Its lipsmaking good.
Halve & stone plums.
Butter a pan really well, then sprinkle over brown castor sugar (or white). Put on hob to heat.Then fill pan with the plums, cut side down and cook for 5- 10 mins.
Then cover plums with pastry (short or puff..I prefer short)..
transfer to hot oven and cook till pastry is goldy colour.
turn out onto serving plate.
This is great way to use plums..and served with cream, custard or icecream..........Mmmmm, deeelishus

Ellie I love plums too, haven't tried French plum tart ..... but I will, sounds absolutely super. Will let you know how I get on....

IMHO Jello, one of the best 'big' supermarkets for fresh fruit 'n' veg is in Algarve Shopping

You can get really fresh vegetables in most supermarkets ( intermarche, modelo, plus, continente- algarve shopping, etc.) and of course every Saturday mornings in Silves, Armação de Pera,etc., next to the local Municipal market- you won`t miss it - they have the small local farmers selling their fresh products.Especially Armação de Pera is exceptional- you try it. Must go first thing in the morning- 8 till 11.
