I met a couple just before Christmas who just had hand luggage as they had just come from their house in Carvoeiro. Wasn't you was it Lesley Jean?

On the subject of flights though, I can't say I've had a better flight with BA or anyone else than I have had with Easyjet. In fact the actual flights with Easyjet have been really good.

I liked your post Michael Crane. Very informative. Wish there were more posts like yours.

As for the wheel chair episode, I saw the reverse situation used this spring. I was waiting at the luggage carousel for my luggage in Ottawa and noticed a fellow being wheeled over by an airport attendant to the carousel. He pointed out his pieces to the attendant, who took them down onto the floor upon which the fellow got up off the wheelchair, folded it up, gave it to the attendant, then took his luggage and walked out of the customs area and out the airport terminal.

I mentioned this to our friends accompanying us who said it was real neat as they noticed the fellow was able to sit and ride through the long lineup going through customs while everyone else had to shuffle through.

Very interesting.

Just to add to the debate I have a parent who is physically unable to walk any distance to a plane (or anywhere - from the sitting room to the kitchen!!) due to breathing difficulties and is boarded these days by wheel chair, she is then given oxygen throughout the flight. Upon reaching the other end - because she is a 'wheelchair board ' she has to be a wheelchair disembark - however because she has been given oxygen rich air throughout the flight - on disembarking a plane she actually feels able to beat Linford Christie over 100m and gets out of the wheelchair feeling physically better than does for 99% of her life and very, very embarrassed!

In past years, if you were flying with BA you could say you were feeling a bit short of breath and ask for a blast of oxygen. Good fun :D

Lesley Jean wrote::lol:  hehe Dave, as we have a house out there we leave a Portugal wardrobe of clothes for use when we are out, then all I need to take with me is something smart to go out for dinner or to friends. Works really well. Means we have room to take out a few 'essentials' like branded tea bags, Thai spices/sauces (as we love Thai food) and any toiletries we cant get in the supermarket.
We also have a property, Lesley, but still can't get the luggage down to hand baggage. Can't even blame the wife - just been over for 5 days with a mate and still took a suitcase!!!
Mind you, did take a load of stuff over for the new granddaughter!!! :D

Actually Lesley it wasn't Christmas at all  I am confusing that with the trip I took back to the UK with my little girl at the beginning of February.

I am beginning to think though, that by some people's comments on here, I know who some people or, or at least know of them.

One of the things that really p***es me off is the size of the so called 'hand luggage' that some people take on board, if it's hand luggage why does it have to have wheels & pull along handle on it? Takes up all the overhead locker space so you have to put your own flight bag about 10 rows away from you. The other thing is people with huge rucksacks who fling them onto their back without any thought or condideration for those standing behind, I saw one old dear nearly knocked off her feet by some brainless pratt on the airport bus last time I flew.

Ok, moan over, just don't get me started!!

Feel a large VAT coming on. :D

Ah, but you have started :)

Totally agree about 'hand' luggage. I have smaller bags in the hold. The airlines all have a "If it can't fit in here, you can't take it aboard" thingy, but I've never actually seen anyone using it to decide hold or cabin.

I always take squashy bags onboard and I get really really peed off when some moron with a suitcase rams my bag tightly into the corner so that they can get more than their fair share of locker space.

Moan over . . . .

. . . . for the time being

Jeremy, its only use is when waiting for a Check-in desk to open the hand-baggage template is the first thing they put out as in indication of which desk(s) will be in use

 I have been asked to put a bag in one of those occasionally, as I also take a squishy bag it has always fitted in fine. I usually only have a small hand luggage ( 50cm x 25cm x 35cm) but I do know what you mean about huge bags being taken on as hand luggage, it amazes me that they can get away with it, when I get asked to put a smaller one in the 'thingy'

Misty, still might have been us as we also traveled out in Jan, Feb and March!

Sorry folks - I ALWAYS travel hand luggage only now with Easyjet as it means I don't have to check in. Just think that the slight inconvenience for you to see me pulling my little trolleybag means that there are LESS PEOPLE TO CHECK IN WITH YOU!

Honestly - chill out!

I pull my bag along because it hurts my shoulder to even carry a handbag. Providing the bag is small enough to fit in the Easyjet bag tester, then it can be hand luggage. I think it is a great idea and definitely helps reduce check in queues. I have never had to squash someone elses bag in order to get mine in. Some people treat other's belongings badly and would manage to squash bags even if they had a tiny piece of hand luggage.

This hang baggage thing is great and if you can reduce your luggage sufficiently, it does save loads of time at both ends of your journey. It took me about 4 hours to find exactly the right sized bag, but it was worth it. At least Easyjet say they will take any weight providing you can lift it into the overhead locker and it is the right size. Monarch state they only accept 5 kilos hand luggage, but they have never weighed my bag which is normally heavier than that, and I always take it now as hand luggage.

Phew - bit of an essay here, but as I am now a once or twice a month traveller to Cvo, I am saving 2 hours checking in each trip and probably 1 hour picking up baggage. Definitely worth it in my view!

Actually fmm, the Monach limit is 10kg. We know because we now fly cabin baggage only, having equipped the villa for all our clothing needs when in pt. We visit about 6 times a year, and the time saved is important to us. Our hand baggage meets the airline size requirements, so don't feel guilty about flying this way.
