Portugal could be nation of oldest, poorest in Europe in 2050:
LISBON, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's aging population and low productivity would make the country the oldest and poorest in the European Union, according to a European Commission's report carried by Portugal's press on Monday.
Portugal currently has a per capita gross domestic product that is 68 percent of the European Union average, a figure the EC said would probably continue until 2050. This figure would put it at the bottom of the EU wealth table alongside Greece by 2050, said the EC report on the relations between demographic evolution and economic development.
Portugal's economy would be growing at barely 1.9 percent a year until 2010, the study estimated. That would rise to an average 2.1 percent between 2011 and 2030 before falling back to 0.8 percent as Portugal is expected to lack economically active younger people.
The EC suggested that boosting immigration be one solution to the ageing population and slowing economy.
In a separate study, Portugal's Family Policy Agency (IPF) said that the country had the highest divorce rate among European nations, with more than 1 million broken marriages every year, or one in every 33 seconds.
"Portugal has been the champion from 1995 to 2004, with its divorce rate rising by 89 percent," said the study. Divorces in Italy increased by 62 percent and in Spanish, by 59 percent in the same period of time.
IPF President Eduardo Hertfelder said the situation was alarming. To give an idea of the size of the numbers, he said that some 10 million couples divorced in Europe between 1990 and 2004 in the 15 countries of the European Union.
The IPF is a multi-national organization based in Madrid, which says its mission is to "defend the institution of the family." Enditem
