Contingency Planning

Post by maddi »

I have a couple of those burning issues that I mull over whilst trying to get to sleep at night and now is as good a time as any to ask about them on here.

1) How many people when they make the move to Portugal maintain a property in their country of origin? What sort of things would a decision to do that be based on ?

2) When you live there how easy is it to travel (go on hols) whether it is a fortnight in Greece or Turkey or something more adventurous like seeing Macchu Pichu, Angkor Wat or the great wall of China?

Thanks muchly peeps

Maddi :)

Cracking topic Mads, we are having the "leave a base here" discussion for when we make the move (5/6 years). It seems to me that the world is a small place now so.... sell up and dont invest in the U.K. the kids can come to Portugal in their University holidays etc etc. For me to invest in a flat where I would want to live near my U.K. house and this would cost £200000 min, this leaves a hole in my fund for Portugal. I get a good deal in the Marriott hotel chain (£65 double per night) so if I "pop" back stay in a hotel and free up £200k !

Hi Maddi,
We came to live to Tavira last November and as we had the house in Portugal for 4 years prior to the move we were fortunate in not needing to sell to buy.

The decision on whether we sold our home in Twickenham changed on a virtual daily basis lol. Selling up would give us an income but once you sell up in London it's very difficult to get back should things not work out.
The eventually decision was quite simple we've rented it to the children so now kids it's pay back time.

We haven't burnt our bridges and depending on how everthing works we still have the option to review it. so I suppose the decision hasn't really been made just postponed.

By the way I'm writing this in Twickenham and we are counting down the hours (another 22) before we strap up for the flight back to Faro
All the best,
Frank

We didn't keep a base in UK and learnt to regret it. But at the time of our moving and setting up in business in Algarve, we had no thought or wishes to return to UK....at all !
But fate decided otherwise, and we regretted not keeping something small back in UK..as on our return, we found it very difficult to afford a property. We had a hard couple of years before we could get back on the property ladder once more.
Now, we are facing the same decision once again.and this time its for health reasons as well.
At the moment, we aim to put this place on the market in July..just to see what happens. We're in no hurry and would want full asking price.
But then, on our more 'thoughtful & cautious' days, we think, why not rent this out..and rent something longterm in Algarve?
Difficult decisions.,and can understand fully, those of you making them now.....but I wouldn't want to go through the trauma of a decade ago, again!
Mind you, at the same time, lifes for living and sometimes you have to take a gamble....don't you? :)

Our master plan does include keeping a small flat back in the UK as we may well bounce back every few months.
But so much does depend on the performance of pension funds over the next few years.

AS to those exotic holidays, we do miss them but there will hopefuly still be plenty of opportunity in the years ahead.
