Snowbirds and Heat
Now I have some people's attention. However some of these people cannot read and comprehend what they are reading. My title refers to heat. If Portugal wants to be a third country in the EU then some of the replies here will keep it that way.
As for maple syrup and coffee, I bring these items realizing that I cannot expect or wish to find it in the Algarve and the coffee prices are so out of touch (that's the cost), it's cheaper for me to bring it with me. This is what we do based on supply and demand (Economics 101). The same goes for tourism. I and many other tourists feel if you want to promote your country than you have to make the few neccesities available otherwise there is another place on earth. At least when I went to the Himalayas, I knew what to expect
You will think about it seriously when your investment in your property goes down when the eastern european countries start giving people what they want. If you haven't noticed even the EU is losing interest in Portugal.
As to the American influence, do not worry there is none. Canadians will visit and be nice enough to say it was okay. If it was the Americans, lucky if they visit the Algarve in the first place and secondly they would tell the whole world what they would change before they would go back.
From some of the replies I read here, some of the colonists from Britain would love to keep the place isolated and impoverished. Too many changes in the home country therefore this is good place to get lost before it changes too.

Ican read okay ( I did have some schooling)...yeah okay, your topic was initially about heating and you seem to have had good debate about that subject.....
But what has Brits eating their 'national food' ,as you put it, got to do with it? By the way, our national food, or traditional meal is good old roast beef and yorkshire pudding!

Hoser, what on earth is the point in making countries the same? Do you expect Portuguese garages to keep a stock of monstrous American cars just in case someone from America wants one? Do you expect Europeans to eat carp American food and listen to carp American music just to make you all feel at home? Of course not. If you are cold put a pullover on and stop whinging.

My parents have just returned from their annual monthly stay in Algarve. Tui has taken over Thomas Cook and the hotels etc have all been told that the long stays will be stopped now. Don't think this is a good idea......my parents still prefer to do a package rather than do their own so it will be interesting to see if the Algarve notices a drop in long stay pensioners visiting from UK next winter.........don't think businesses will be very happy.

I think there is a middle way here. The point of going to another country is to experience something different and so I don't have time for people complaining about the food and having to have an English breakfast and stuff like that, but I think being uncomfortable and cold, isn't nice. Most Portuguese don't go in for heating because of the cost but will tell you it is because they don't like it. I think decent heating is the thing I miss most in the winter.
In most Canadians' defence. The ones I know seem to make great efforts to tour the whole of Portugal and learn and read about the history etc. Sundance and I were talking about this the other day i.e. how the Canadian visitors show a lot more interest in the country than most of the other visiting nationalities.
I haven't read the thread as thoroughly as I should, as been out today but I don't think he meant people like you, Ellie. However, there are plenty of "colonist" types here, for sure, as well as people like me that think Portugal could do with "upgrading" a bit shall we say and moving forward. It is easy to stereotype a nationality and we all do it from time to time. I'll start on the Canadians after my visit, don't worry. Reeeeeeally

and should remember that in Portugal, like me.. he is a visitor to that country.
I feel very protective of my past home..and I get just as angry at English/British people, who run down our country as soon as they move abroad!

Try to think of Portugal catering for the home comforts of all the nationalities who visit and the things they might like to have available, just in case they feel the need!
Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and I haven't even mentioned Australia and New Zealand. Then there are Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.
I am not going to mention America, Canada and Brazil, Angola and Mozambique !
Multiply all the shops and different foods by all the nationalities who visit and tell me how big the store room will be!
Get real! When I visit from Ireland I don't expect to find my local Costcutter or Dunne's Stores there. No Denny's black and white pudding, no Hafner sausages. Guinness, yes but no Harp Lager! No Fruitfield Marmalade for my morning toast and very few Irish morning newspapers but what the hell, I'm in Portugal, a foreign country and on holidays. So, I relax and smell the coffee!
PS, If there are any countries I've left out, so invade me!

FM seeks more humane deportations of visa-less Portuguese from Canada

Foreign Minister Diogo Freitas do Amaral asked the Canadian authorities on Thursday to use "reasonable criteria" in serving deportation orders against Portuguese nationals illegally living in the country.
Speaking after a meeting with his Ottawa counterpart, Peter Mackay, Lisbon's No. 1 diplomat said he had also asked for more humane handling of expulsions of Portuguese from Canada.
Fretas do Amaral had arrived in Canada a day earlier on an official three-day visit aimed to seek more time for deported Portuguese to leave the country.
Before leaving Lisbon, he said that after his talks with Canadian officials on their recent implementation of speedier deportation procedures, he would urge legal Portuguese immigrants not to encourage family members to become visa-less workers in Canada.
After meeting his counterpart, Freitas do Amaral had been due to give a press conference in the Canadian Foreign Ministry.
But Portuguese reporters were barred from the building and the Lisbon minister refused to speak to Canadian media, giving a press conference later at the Portuguese embassy.
Lisbon Foreign Office spokesman António Carneiro Jacinto told Lusa this week that the Portuguese government "considers it inhuman that people who have worked on average for five years in Canada are given only eight days to leave the country".
Canadian immigration authorities say they have already deported 191 Portuguese nationals in the past 12 months and deportation orders will be served on another 67 Portuguese citizens and their family members in the coming week.
The majority of the estimated 500,000 Portuguese nationals living in Canada are concentrated around the city of Toronto, where about 15,000 are estimated to be living and working illegally.
The Portuguese authorities announced this week that a reception center is being set up at Lisbon Airport to give support to deported Portuguese nationals arriving from Canada.

OK. We have always had a similar problem with our Irish illegals working in the USA. But then they are ILLEGAL workers!!
