Renewal of Driving Licences

Just thought I would warn you of something folks and think it is relevant to General Carvoeiro. When you reach 70 years of age, you have to renew your driving licence in Portugal or the UK (and I assume anywhere in the EU) and in order to do this, have to have a medical. MAKE SURE when your doctor or doctor's receptionist completes the required medical form that they put ALL the categories down correctly i.e. if you can drive large vehicles or motorbikes or tow trailers etc etc that these are listed correctly. Someone I know has recently been through this process and because the doctor's receptionist made a mistake on the form and omitted some of the categories, the DGV issued a new driving licence without them marked off. When he went back to query this, the receptionist did another form (although of course, it wasn't her fault

) and he approached the DGV again via an intermediary to re-issue another corrected licence. No can do, they said. It is impossible, they said. He has been told he will have to wait until it is renewed again in 2 years time, as the system basically isn't flexible enought to deal with the error.

I am going to try to appeal against this again on his behalf BUT please check your documents and forms carefully before they are sent to Faro DGV to save yourself from this situation.

Maybe "loosing" the wrong licence and applying for a replacement would be a solution? Granted he would have to pay for the replacement, but that might be a way to rectify the situation without trying to move mountains.

I'd thought of that but apparently they have all the details on computer now, so they would simply re-issue the same licence with the same categories on until your next medical is due. Something I am double-checking on but I think one of our Portuguese friends, who came to a couple of Thursday night meetings, said that was the case too. Oh well, let's see.

Perhaps a bit drastic, but a change of address would require a new form would it not. Well, one can always go home to mum (as an address)

Evening Richard, yes it was another option considered, although being that he is 70, I doubt his "mum" is still about.

and the address has to coincide with the addy on the residencia - otherwise the fuzz can fine you for not having your documents in order - I think changing the residencia because of a dud driver's licence is probably not an option.

Anyway, good luck with the appeal. I think the words to try on the appeal are bom senso - or does that have different connotations in Portuguese

I wouldn't be surprised if common sense does not exist in the Faro Beauracracy
