The problem is that we don't know how long it is going to take for his leg to heal - he is quite an old boy, we think about 10 or 12, and although he is getting better he is still limping quite badly.

Blue said 'What do the processionary caterpillars turn into'?
Its Moths Blue..think they're called the winter pine processionary moth.
I know we've discussed them a few times here, but worth saying again, don't ever touch one yourself!..their irritating hairs can get into your airways and I think could be particularly damaging to anyone with say, astma or breathing problems!
Birds won't touch /eat them..except (so my Med gardening books tell me) the Hoopoe bird!
If you get any in your pines (they strip the needles from these trees) get the experts in to handle them..
I think they use special stuff or sometimes 'flame torch'?
G put advice on these creatures here somewhere I think?

Yes Gambo and others, inclusive of myself had a discussion on these caterpillars as there was an extremely good article about them in the Algarve Resident last year. The thread would have been from August when a guest wrote in asking ways to destroy them and Gambo had some very good useful information on this.

Poor, poor Barney. You know the association of nurses in the UK researched the effects of massage on post operative (human) patients & conducted blind trials, they found that just 15 minutes of massage a day accelerated the healing process significantlhy. It didn't have to be full body just an arm or leg as for obvious reasons not all patients could receive comprhensive massage, even the massaging of just the hands & particularly the feet had a beneficial effect. If nothing else it is highly enjoyable for the recipient, perhaps Barney might benefit.

......and then their have been wild animals, who came for food...I use to have a squirrel who use to lay asleep infront of the fire and take food from my hand. But I would not recommend anyone else doing it that is unless you know what you are doing...i.e. I did not and at first through the squirrel's timidness and mine I received a really deep scratch from him on the back of my hand and as a precaution went to my doctor.I called the squirrel "squatter"...I am sitting here laughing, because as I am typing this I am now thinking.....I wonder what the neighbours use to think, when I use to call from the garden "come squatter where are you, your supper is waiting".
So what's your pet(s) past and present names and do they match up with any of the above

I was told that by a vet too....mongrels are much tougher than pedigree!
We've only ever had Boxers..

Our Retroodle is having trouble with one of his ears, something is obviously irritating him (a grass seed or similar probably) & he's shaking his head, this is a common problem with poodle or poodle cross dogs as they have a lot of hair growth in the ear canal making it difficult to keep their ears clean. I have run out of the product I used in the UK to clean his ears which was a solution in a bottle with a spout that I bought from our vets (can't remember the name & thrown the bottle away), does anyone know of a product available in Portugal that I can buy
BTW the name of my very own first pet which I was given when I was about 8, was 'Aphrodite' a beautiful black cat- my big brother was studying greek mythology at the time.

I purchased mine from the Pet Shop next door to Dra Kirsten Peters Surgery in Guia, but you can get these products or similar from any good pet shop....and I have also seen ear washes in some supermarkets.

I am quite sure you will be aware of the following, but for others who may not:-
The usage for both the above products are to place the nozzle in line with the canal of the ear squirt a few drops down and don't allow the dog to shake his head until you have massaged the bottom of the ear. This was the instructions given to me via our vet. I also keep drops in Yogi's pet cupboard for when the need arises.
As summer is just arrriving keep an eye on the ears on a daily basis, just gently wipe/dab them with cotton wool i.e. if your dog like ours enjoys swimming .......and if they go in the pool.... hose them off when they come out.
