My friend on friday recived a letter from his bank informing him that by order of the Finances of Lagoa they have had to cease 3000€ from his account due to un paid IRS from 2003. Be ware they now have the power not only to cease your property but also your accounts.

well I supppose on that basis if the finances owe a tax payer money ..then he or she can just walk in and seize something or other from their offices to the value of monies owed.

In theory the finanças have always been able to sieze bank funds to cover tax debts - possibly they have not made that much use of it in the past, but then again, they have never been this broke.

As a non-resident appointing a fiscal representative who takes care of these things is a must. If there is a fiscal rep in place, (s)he should check what happened to the letters from the financas requesting payment. Unlike the seguranca social, the finaças do normally give a fair warning before they grab.

If he is resident, you friend should check that his address with the finanças is up-to-date.
