I think you have to be careful not to take money for transporting people because you would fall foul of your insurance company.

I think that if the insurance company find out that you are carrying passengers for money they will happily walk away from the costs associated with extracting your car from the front of a 767 or whatever awful accident you have (possibly collision with a refrigerated lorry?). You need to be sure that whatever present you are given is not related to the lift.
I think that is correct, I should check if I were you.

I believe there has been legislation in the UK to allow drivers to take money in order to promote car sharing schemes but I've not heard of any similar arrangement in Portugal

Of course if the OP would reply it might be a different matter.
I'm sorry I've been out of the country & hence away from PC. Of course Taxi's are legal! I wouldn't have thought it was required to state the obvious!!! As for "friends" paying for "fuel", this is a grey area. If they are genuinely friends then it is ok (I assume), but certain vehicle are noted on entering the airport on a very regular basis....then saying your friends just probably won't be enough if caught by the police!
As for druming up trade by quoting false remarks....luckily enough my business is doing very well!! The questions that are risen here are to read and I assume to be considered, if you think it pure nonense then before making such a statement I suggest you contact the local Região de Turismo and enquire, as there are some of us who know what we are talking about!

o transfer clients to & from a Portuguese airport, you must have a fully licenced Portuguese travel agency
is what you said It's not what you meant right?
See I find it difficult to understand why you posted this at all. So, if you need a ride back and fro to the airport, you can use a taxi, a friend, a bus, walk, ride a bike, or a horse, or a space hopper or roller skates. Another method is a bus run by a travel agency.

Illegal transfers are people who do not have a licence or insurance to do what they are doing. The do not pay tax, social security....and do not have a limited company. Of course there are many ways to travel that are legal. All that has been discussed here is what is not legal...and what is within my knowledge as a director of a travel agency. Would you with an airline that isn't licenced and insured? Of course you could walk bacj to Uk or even ride a horse!! But most people use aircraft.
All that is being done here is an exchange of information....if this offends you (regarding your ridiculous remarks) I would like to know why? Do you run illegal transfers in a clapped out car????

I don't know much about this particular line of business Guest Travel Agency but from what I see daily in other lines of "business" here, I can well believe it. I feel sorry for people, who make the effort to set up a legitimate business and pay all the right taxes and insurances and then they turn up at the airport and see people doing "illegal" transfers. You must wonder why you bother to be legit. :? But good on you for being so.

It would seem to me imho that this matter can be easily dealt with..i.e. when legitimate companies, are aware of illegal operators......say operating to/from Faro Airport...to take said vehicles registration(s) number(s) and then forward them onto the appropriate department....

That assumes that the appropriate department cares and will actually do something about it. Illegal operators fill voids that the authorities allow them to fill.

I have heard of people being caught, fined, and told not to even think about applying for a licence as they would be refused!

I have to confess when I wrote the above post...Richard's comments were at the back of my mind. But Kteee, I am lifted somewhat by your words this morning.
Regards to you both

GTA, don't let pm get to you - it's a hobby of his.

Don't let his attitude put you (or any other guest) off posting information.

Don't you start. The guy said

which is not true/not what he meant.
