If so,click on search and search all files and folders,to see if i can retrieve anything at all!
If not try re-installing microsoft word and then take it from there.

I wouldn't do that. You need to get it fixed. It may be a bios problem and not the disc at all. I would strongly advise you to get someone knowledgeable to fix it. If they just say they will format the disc and reinstall, they don't come into the knowledgeable category.

Thanks everyone for your help in sorting out my PC.
I'm at work now and our IT manager is hopefully fixing it, but it was good to be able to tell him to check it out and not just re-install windows - Thanks PM & Ellie
Hopefully normal service will resume by tomorrow.

Thanks for asking Peter.
Well picture the scene. Our IT guy at work couldn't fix it, so sent me to the IT guy's, IT guy, When the hard drive was taken out, there was lots of humming and hoing and tutting and sucking of teeth!
' Well!, he said, I'm not surprised your 12 month old hard drive has broken, you've got the worst kind of hard drive installed!! and I can't fix it.
'If it would've been any other kind'.... (hang on, isn't this the kind of talk you get when you want your boiler/car/electrics etc fixed?

So I had to buy a new hard drive, fortunately he managed to download most of my data from the old hard drive, which I really needed, so £200 later, and two weeks later, my PC works.

For the techy's amoungst you, it was apparently some errors on the hard drive which were not caused by me, and because it failed in windows, it would boot up. I never really got to the bottom of it.

i had a similar prob with my laptop, which i bought 2nd hand- it started makes funny loud noises, i spoke to a tech and he said that the hard drive needs to be replaced, so for £70 i got a 40 gig but a faster one than last time.
