Disappointed that none of you locals bothered to reply to this post. We have an interest, since we are arriving December 30th, and would like to know if we can leave our major shopping to the 31st. There has been a lot of comment regarding the direction in which this forum is heading, and ignoring requests for information, probably says it all. :(

I agree, Barry. We have a load of local members who must know the opening times.

Unfortunately the times aren't in FAQ because I don't know them, myself.

Come on, locals, get your fingers out and answer :)

The 31st is a normal working day, but it is safe to assume that, like most other comercial establishments, they will be closed on the 1st.

No answer to this yet, as us locals do not know the answer ourselves. This is Portugal and like many things we do not know until the last moment what is happening :o (this is not because we are foreigners not understanding but it is a fact of life here things are not planned well in advance- even when it relates to things like school holidays we only find out a few days before when new term starts)

Most supermarkets have now announced that they will close at 6pm on Xmas Eve so would expect, but can not be certain that this will be the same on the 31st.

It's usually the same every year, perhaps that's why they don't announced it three months in advance. They normally close at 6 pm on the 24th and are closed all day the 25th.

Again on the 31st they usually close at 6 pm but the bigger shops will be open again on the first. The supermarkets will probably be open all day and the hypermarkets until 1pm (Sunday opening times).

Just curious. Do they announce well in advance in the UK the closing times on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve? :D
