swimming pools

can i ask for some advice re putting in a swimming pool? I am completely green about this and do not know if there are any absolutely 'don't do this' things to look out for. For instance pool companies always want you to put the largest one in and I am not sure that you need to do this - any thoughts would be appreciated!

putting in swimming pools needs a licence from camara ..dont be fooled by anyone who tells you otherwise...some of course dont bother and pay the fine

pools usually made of concrete with finish of tile or mosaics (a nightmare always coming off ...believe me I know from bitter experience) also my favourite for quickness of putting in - just a few days and ease of maintence are fibreglass pools. if you drive along en 125 road you will see many firms doing these pools or again firms go to fatacil

dont forget to factor in monthly cost of cleaning (which you will have to pay for if you dont live here) and water costs (make sure you have a good supply and dont need to have water delivered by a tanker . expensive and always a worry in case they dont come)

dont forget to consider instead a jacuzzi...lots of electonics to go wrong but can use all year round - firm in lagoa called solarambiente (s africans run it)

Also you have to remember that the bigger and deeper the pool, the longer it will take to heat up by natural means i.e. the sun.

I love swimming lengths, so a pool of a minimum of about 12 to 15m is a must for me, but if you just want to dip in and cool off, then a much smaller one will suffice.

Ditto Martin regarding getting the proper permission from your local Câmara. The fines can be a lot more than people anticipate.

Jacuzzis are great.

there was interesting tv programme about pools in america..they had come up what we might term linear pools.

for many people who need a pool for excerise only then the it was considered ...why does anyone need a 15 x 5 metre pool with 50000 litres of water?
so the idea was developed whereby a pool was made ....10 metres long X 1 metre wide and 1 metre deep ...ideal for those who just need to swim laps for health problems..further designs were made instead of just a straight line
...make a large S shape..they really were very attractive

also there are pools very small with a power jet to swim against..very clever

As Martin says you run a real risk if you do not obtain a swimming pool licence from the local Town Hall, Planning Department and if you are in the countryside almost impossible to obtain one unless you have a cisterna (ie already a concrete tank covering the ground)...we waited 1 year to obtain ours from Silves Camara and a neighbour waiting about 2yrs...so you need to make application asap...the shape of pool is also important and whilst some of the kidney shape and similiar look nice they are not always the best to actually swim in etc.
