This latest spate of ATM robberies is believed to be the work of an organised gang of Spanish criminals. I think Portugal generally and the Algarve in particular provide easy pickings for these ruthless guys as the police here have very limited resources indeed.
To get back on the Cvo.com track our own dear old CEPSA station on the road in was robbed by a single masked man, apparently with a gun, last Saturday night/Sunday morning.

This is incorrect - unpaid work what used to be known as community service is undertaken by offenders who have received a community penalty and they have often received such a sentence because they hold fulltime jobs/careers, pay rent or mortgages, taxes and are otherwise self sufficient. So we don't 'pay' to sustain these people - they are most commonly drink drivers - and referring to a previous thread could easily be several people who use this forum and are otherwise of good standing.Maddi also with respect.... in so far as your comment that Community Service in the UK goes unpaid to the criminals......no this is not correct.... the criminals receive full board and lodgings, clothes, entertainment and the like

If you mean looking after them by monitoring their progress for the courts, checking the work they do meets the required standard, providing additional supervision and ensuring a swift return to court if someone fails to meet the terms of their sentence then you are correct this is paid for by public funds and you are right - without them I wouldn't have the job that I do and quite frankly that would be brilliant but I wouldn't be out of a job per se I am more than qualified to undertake any number of worthwhile careers.those that look after them.... inclusive of yourself.... salaries and expenses are paid from Public Monies...and if these individuals did not exsist,...then of course the likes of you Maddi would be out of a job

I think the precieption is of a "revolving door" with same people going in and out of "The System" and commiting the same crimes over and over again.
People in Texas felt the same way, and they passed a "Three Strike" law.
Three felony convictions and you go to prison for life without parole.
Of course, we have to pay out enormous amounts of money to build new prisons and staff them, but it's better than having to pay for schools and affordable housing.
It's a tight job market, so it has an advantage for all those who are left in the work pool.
They can go to work.... building prisons.
But in reality, the "illegals" will be hired to build the prisons, because they will work cheaper, and those that arn't working (and some of the "illegals who are) will turn to crime, be convicted, necessitating the building of even more prisons and hireing more staff....... and the beat goes on.
(of course, I'm refering to Texas, and I'm sure this doesn't apply to your country)

Obviously one has to bow to your knowledge on this matter as you are as it were on the front line etc.....but I am a little confused in what you say and I say so because...in the mid 90´s or thereabout...I was carrying out some voluntary work in a center for a well known charity...now and then we had men coming in to help...and these individuals were on "community service" ....but I have to say all were also on the dole and receiving as I understand it Job Seeker Allowance! This use to make me raise my eyebrows because to get to the center you required transport because it was out of the way...and by the way all these so called out of work individuals all arrived in vehicles which they owned... one I recall being a top of the range 6months old Sabb!...and yes regular inspections of these individuals were made...... and again as I undertood it by the Probation Service Department....all of which has to be paid for. These individuals were receiving free meals from the chairty, yet the members of the center had to pay, admittedly it was only £1 for lunch and 10pence for liquids.
