Back in 1981, in town, there were only Smilers, The Long Bar, Colombos, and The Bistro. "Out" of town (cos it was almost in the country!) was the Lanterna Velha. A bit later we got the Robin II. That was about it!

A prize for anyone who can say where they were/are, name them now, and say what happened to those owners back then!

I say,thats a bit rude for a Bishop isn't it. I've a good mind to give you the finger!
Remember someone called Keiron running the Long Bar in '92..wonder what happened to him? He was English but family had lived in South Africa I think?

I think the Bishop's got a point - If I had a bar and was making discreet enquiries about selling it I wouldn't want this fact plastered on the web (not very good for staff morale for one thing)

If I had a bar and wasn't selling it, then reference that it must be losing money and I was bound to need to sell soon would also make my language more colourful.

Kieron was Mel & Joyce Thurgoods son. I think Mel & Joyce went back to S. Africa. Don't know what happened to Kieron though.

Arthur Hanna was just selling Smilers. I hear he is in Australia most of the time.

Arnaldo was running Colombos for Bjorn and Diane Schoyen I think. He is in Venezuala now!

Bistro was under the steady helm of Willy Wansleeben! now deceased I believe

ha ha!! I didn't think you were testing me about Lanterna Velha
it was owned by Cor Rietkerk and Antonio ran the restaurant with Connie Cor's daughter... or was that further ahead. I think the Robin II was run by Leon Greenshield's dad at some point... I'm thinking of what is now sully's. Or was that the Robin Hood?

Do you think that fact I was only 12 at the time and know all this might point towards a slightly erratic bar-centric upbringing, pater?

Well done but the Robin II was developed from the fishermans bar it had been by an Irish guy who had the Robin Hood in Armação de Pêra - simply can't recall his name at present.
