What is the Portuguese for 'Vegan'?..do the restaurants have the sign outside or do you have to go in and ask?
I'm not a vegan by the way..but interested in all types of diet/food.
Does it mean you only eat vegetables/fruit/nuts/cereals?....no meat/fish/ dairy products?
I went vegetarian once for a year..and used a lot of mushrooms as a meat substitute.But found that I was eating too much dairy produce..and slowly drifted back to eating meat..as i did get a bit anaemic.
But i like the sound of the vegan diet; think it sounds quite healthy.

I am probably wrong, but my dictionary says that vegan and vegetarian are the same in Portuguese..vegetariano!

I don't think I could be vegan as I like milk and cheese to much, but am more likely to eat vegetarian meals that meat as I don't particularly like meat, mind you I don't think I could give up fish.

I must admit we have found vegetarian places in and around cvo but not vegan, so it is interesting to see some mentioned on here.

I think the Portuguese have a hard time coming to terms with vegetarians, let alone vegans, so maybe they don't have a proper word for it. Vegans tend to eat a lot of nut based dishes and soya stuff like tofu. It seems a bit of a "windy" diet to me.

Lets start with a few definitions. Put simply, there are "vegetarians" who don't eat meat, but will eat fish, "non-meat/non-fish Vegetarians" and "Vegans" who eat no fish or meat or dairy products. My wife is of the second variety, so here is her advice:

Beware of the Portuguese restaurant who just says "yes, we can do that" as one usually ends up with a plate of plain boiled vegetables. Technically OK, but not very inspiring. So, unfortunately we end up at restaurants with a Northern Europe origin or Chef.

Those who make an effort to have at least 2 Veggie items on the menu and are recommended (by us), include Ele & Ela, L'Orange, Bernhards, Maximes and O Salmao. Others who have creative Veggie on the menu, but we've not visited recently, include A Vela, Village Inn and Bon Bon.

However, many of these veggie dishes may be covered in a cheese or cream sauce, and you may be able to ask for a variation.

Bernhards and O Salmao are probably most likely to have a good vegan option or adaption - would be interested to hear any feedback on that one.

p.s. Suggestion for MC: You could add a (V) symbol to all the above named restaurants in the FAQ on eateries.

I don't mean to be pedantic but by definition, shouldn't a vegetarian not eat any fish either?

My friend is a vegetarian which means she doesn't eat anything animal whether meat or fish.

I usually take her to Maxime which she really likes and we also went to Ela & Ela which had a very nice veggie option.

Then I guess that most italian restaurants should have a vegetarian pizza and pasta.

You would think so wouldn't you TB. However I know a "Vegetarian" that eats only white meat...go figure that one if you can

That said. I also know a Vegetarian who hates vegetables, figure that one out too whilst you are at it

Yes, TB, those vegetables do the same to me

I'm strictly a "carnivore". Thats a vegetarian, who eats only meat

Hi, vegan food..hmmm...not as difficult as it seems. There is a shop opposite JUMBO in Faro..thinks its called terra..anyways its a veggie healthfood shop and they have vegan supplies. Its not cheap but it is vegan. Also Apollonia in Almancil have vegan foodstuffs too.

In restaurants etc its best to call in adavance, i have found that most places will sort something out. Indian places in particular have made me some fabby vegan meals for me...

theres a great vegetarian restaurant in portimao, on avenida 25 de abril, next to the court house. However it is tiny, but they do take aways. The menu looks delicious!
