November rainfall way above average
November rains put and end to drought

The water that has collected in the dams in the Algarve over the past two weeks is more than the equivalent of half the volume supplied by Águas do Algarve to municipalities during 2004. Reservoir levels have gone up several metres.
The rain that has fallen over the past two weeks, especially last weekend, has significantly increased the reserves in the Algarve’s dams. In total, they have collected 38.5 million cubic metres of water, which is a considerable amount if compared to the total supplied by the company Águas do Algarve to the region’s municipalities during 2004: 63 million cubic metres.
The Odeleite dam alone has collected 18 million cubic metres, and the reservoir level has gone up about five metres. The Arade dam has an additional 8 million cubic metres and the level went up by four metres. The Funcho dam has collected 6 million cubic metres, going up by 8.5 metres, while in the Beliche dam there are an additional 3.8 million cubic metres and the level is three metres higher. The smaller Bravura dam has also stored one million cubic metres.
Teresa Fernandes, Águas do Algarve’s marketing and communication director said that the figures were very satisfactory and provide greater security, although the company is continuing to invest in a series of improvements to ensure continued supplies even if it did not rain.
And it can never be overstated that the efforts to save water continue to be one of the priorities in public consumption.
As early as October, figures from the Meteorological Institute indicated rainfall in the Algarve well above the corresponding averages, and there are now no parts of the country in a situation of extreme or severe drought.
Although the report on the first fortnight of November is not yet available, the rain that fell during the first two weeks of the month suggests a very favourable weather scenario, with the Meteorological Institute regarding the drought as close to ending throughout the country.
According to the European Centre for Medium-term Weather Forecasting, the average temperature for the three-month period from November 2005 to January 2006 is showing a tendency to be higher than normal. For this three-month period, there is nothing unusual to be seen in terms of total precipitation that is statistically significant.

Summer 2006 will see water back in the taps without restrictions

The rainfall of the last few days of November is close to the averages recorded in the 1970s and 1980s. Next summer, it is guaranteed that there will be no shortages of water.
It was only last weekend that there was sufficient rainfall to raise the dam levels above the critical point. On Sunday, according to official figures to which the Algarve Observer has had access, the Faro Meteorological Station recorded 82 mm (accumulated amount hour by hour), while the Portimão Station recorded 60.9 mm and Sagres 100 mm.
On Saturday, the meteorological stations in Faro recorded 26 mm, S. Brás de Alportel 37 mm and Alcoutim 64.8 mm.
According to a source at the Institute of Meteorology, precipitation in the Algarve averaged 88.1 mm between 1961 and 1990. In the case of Faro, the oldest station in the region, an average of 86.1 mm was recoded during the same period.
The Drought Monitoring Commission, part of INAG, which is scheduled to meet at the beginning of December for its fortnightly review, should decide that the period of drought in the Algarve is now over, the Algarve Observer was told by a source close to that organisation.
For his part, the President of the Algarve Metropolitan Committee, Macário Correia, confirmed that the rainfall situation and the collection of water in the dams will also be discussed at a meeting scheduled for 5th December.
At that meeting, the decision could be taken to stop using the artesian wells by the municipal councils, and to return to using the inter-municipal systems connected to the dams.
Macário Correia said he was satisfied with the volume of water that has already accumulated in the Odeleite and Beliche dams, as, with Tuesday’s heavy rainfall, their levels had gone up by more than five and four metres respectively since October.
The President of the Algarve Metropolitan Committee said that a lot of water had flowed along the rivers into the dams in the eastern Algarve, meaning that there would be a satisfactory increase in levels, but he would also like to see an increase in the volumes of water in the Arade and Funcho dams, which still contain less than satisfactory levels.
Given the available information Macário Correia guaranteed that the amounts of water that had already accumulated allowed him to say for sure that there would be no shortage of water in the Algarve next summer

According to Teresa Fernandes, spokeswoman for the company Águas do Algarve, "many of the municipal boreholes, activated during the summer by the local authorities, have already been disactivated. Gradually, the active boreholes will also be closed".
The supply of water in the region should be regularised soon. That is, the supply should once more come from surface water: around 61 million cubic metres. The total needs of the region are 66 million cubic metres. The difference is made up with subterranean waters, however, the situation is not yet completely resolved: the sources existing in the area of Loulé, one of the most important basins in the Algarve, have not yet burst, as has been reported to Região Sul in various locations,
namely in Fonte Filipe (Querença), where the farmers consider that more rainfall is needed.
Precipitation in the last few weeks has filled "considerably" the principal reservoirs of the region, revealed Teresa Fernandes.
According to the spokeswoman, Odeleite have stored 18 million cubic metres, the Barragem do Funcho six million and Bravura one million, quantities considered "fabulous".
The installation of an infrastructure to complement the pumping, as a way of permitting the use of the water stored in the lake created by the drying up of the Barragem de Odelouca, as has been announced, is no longer justified and the project should be abandoned.
Nevertheless, the company Águas do Algarve continues to advise the rational use of water and not to desist in the adoption of basic measures, like the construction of the Barragem de Odelouca, to guarantee the best future provision possible and avoid future constraints in sup
