Hi, can anyone recommend an english speaking vet in the Carvoeiro area & also does anyone know about pet insurance in Portugal? Our current pet insurers only cover the UK.

I live more or less the same distance to travel from Silves as you would when you arrrive in CV to the above vet (15-20min) ...I cannot praise Kirsten Peters (and her team) to highly in that they saved Yogi's life twice. Twisted stomach and then a spleen removed. Her practice is possibly the most well known one in the Algarve. She also speaks on Phil's Sunday Night Kiss Radio Prog.

I am afraid Blue, no private pet insurance. I managed one year with mine, because I was in the top bracket of cover which covered 12 months travelling abroad.

You know I have been thinking for sometime now, if I could advertised throught out Portugal and get enough signatures of Pet Owners, and then write to various UK Insurance Companies who do a pet plan in the Uk, to see if we could get a company to take us all on.... in that I suspect a large numder of ex-pats would like private pet insurance.

Hope all goes well next Monday...are you getting excited....we are going to the UK on Wednesday to catch up with famiy, friends and Christmas Shopping.

nightrider thank you, we have such a good relationship with our vet I shall miss them terribly so it is reassuring to know that there is such a good vet near by.
I am excited about the move but also anxious, the house is in complete chaos but after a few bevvies in the evening it all looks so much better

I have looked into the above pet cover somtime ago.....but on speaking to my vet's surgery.....they were of the opinion that it was not a very good cover and very expensive......but I agree it's worth looking into...I take it that you have not got any actual cover for a pet yourself! I know that if I was in the UK Axa would not insure our GS dogs i.e. they are both over 8yrs old.

I second the recommendation for Dr Peters, I have 4 cats that had all been in treatment with her over the past years and they are all in excellet shape thanks to her and her team.

We have been very pleased with Solvet in Lagoa ( and Portimao) and are happy to recommend them.

My previous dog was brought over from England and we maintained her insurance policy which offered full European cover. I successfully claimed for her treatment in Portugal.

We bought a new dog here last year and I have not been able to find any pet cover at all in Portugal. I even asked AFPOP to check for me and they drew a blank. It does not seem to be a market that Portuguese insurers cover but I would be very interested to hear if some one does find a policy on offer.

So did I....but I am quite sure that your cover is for 12months travelling abroad under say a Gold Plan..and you have to supply a UK address..more recently Insurance Companies are asking owners with this type of cover to notifiy them on each travel you take outside of the UK during that year's cover. So if you actually live in Portugal and you try to retain such cover, the Insurance companies are now asking proof of travel etc. No what we do need as I said before is a lot of owners to join together and start contacting Insurance Companies in the UK to see if we can get a scheme going. After Chritsmas Hols...I will have a go myself and will post on the forum.

Thanks everyone for recommendations/replies all our animals are well at the moment but obviously want to be prepared, just in case.

Would you believe it, right on cue just as I typed the above Beamish my retroodle threw up his dinner (sorry folks), mind you that's not 'cos he's ill it's because he a greedy fat hound who bolts his food
