Salt water swimming pools !

Hi, someone told me that you could convert a normal pool to salt water which would not need the use of chemicals like chlorine, does anyone know anything about this? ie cost to convert and upkeep of the pool??

Also anyone got an address or website for solar pool covers in Portugal that are better than the bubble one which only seem to have a short life span.

Would be really grateful for any help.

Our villa has just been completed, we used John Woodhams from Sacl on the 125 past Porches on the left 00351919313622 very helpful. We were advised against a salt pool by the builder so we got a self dosing system from John as well as a solar cover

Thanks for that guest, why were you advised against a salt water pool? We hope to be fitting a cover this winter to help prolong the swimming time.

our pool is salt water and it's brilliant, it's about 6 years old now and we've never had a problem. No red stinging eyes, towels and bathing costumes last forever, no green hair! Ours was done by Jacob in Lagoa, we've recently had it covered so can swim every day mmmmm

This might sound silly - when you refer to a 'Salt Water Pool' are you talking about sea water in your pool.

How does it differ from the 'norm'?

I've just been reading up on this. As far as I can see, you pump the water through an electrolysis cell that produces hydochlorous acid from the sodium chloride which kills the bugs. It seems that this is exactly the same as adding chlorine (I've just been reading adverts, so I could be wrong).
So presumably it is less swimming-pooly because the level of chlorine is more closely controlled by the cell than you get by dumping a bucket of bleach in every so often?

Hiya, our problem is that my youngest daughter who loves to swim is asthmatic and the chlorine in the pool which lays as an invisible gas at just above the water level, can give her an attack. hence the thought of turning our pool into a salt water one, also it is not so damaging to material and skin and hair, if your blond your hair can go a lovely shade of green!

Need to do some more research on this before we do anything about it though.
