As for people making "negative" comments according to tbbr, I think it's only cautionary comments. A lot of people think that moving to somewhere they love to holiday in will be a dream come true but there are a lot of different things to consider.

Thanks to everyone for your input. We may spend 2 or 3 months in the Algarve: see how it goes. But I suspect England will always be home.

Understand your feelings Charlie regards always seeing England as home. I got terribly mixed up with that when we were resident in Algarve as I/we did start to really settle there.But I do think, that unless you are very young/young you probably will always regard the place of your birth as home?
My older cousin. He emigrated to South Africa relatively young(early 20s) and died there (Zimbabwe) in his early 60s. But although he regarded himself as Rhodesian/ Zimbabwean..he always thought of England as his 'mother country

I think you are being sensible in thinking of trying it out for a couple of months....but I wouldn't mind betting that you will end up wanting to stay in Algarve

p.s strange thing is though Charlie..although I 'ran down UK' when i was living there..once I landed/settled in Algarve I strongly defended my homeland if anyone criticised it there

Been thinking about what you said Ellie i.e. about those who run down the UK and I tend to agree.

I am so very glad I was born and brought up in a country like that. A tolerant, civilised country, where I was free to express myself. A country that has the best humour in the world, great TV, great theatres, music and arts, eccentricity, a huge choice of things to do (entertainment) and places to go, great educational opportunities for later years e.g. night classes and courses and the Open University, great sporting activity choices, 101 choices of restaurants and food from around the world, fantastic wine bars and beautiful scenery. I could go on.

If only it had better and longer summers, less people and cars and less crime and antisocial behaviour...

We have a house in England and another in the Algarve. At the moment we spend more time in the UK but plan to even things up as work commitments reduce. We plan to downsize our place in the UK eventually but never to give up a UK home.

A couple of bits of advice to add to that already given:

Before we bought in the Algarve we made sure that we visited at all times of the year - many people seem to stick just to their traditional holday period be that winter or summer but you need to see a place at all times.

The other thing we did was to make one visit as if we were already living there and set ourselves an objective of trying to buy things that you need to live in a country but don't need just to holiday - all sorts of things from clothing, to white goods, to diy, etc. It was especially important to us to see what was open out of season and what Portuguese non-tourist type entertainment was available.

Language can be a problem. Although so many speak English I think that to live in a country it is important to speak their language. Ask yourself how you feel about UK immigrants that don't speak English. The problem comes with trying to learn Portguese. Reading it isn't so bad but understanding what a native is saying is a real problem to me.

Although I lived in the UK for 10 years, and am half British, it has never been my home and I've never considered it as such.

When I first moved there I loved it and then it changed. The freedom of speech has gone for fear of offending someone, anyone (Oxfam were asked to take down their X-mas decoration because it would offend other religions) and that to me is the stupidist thing I've ever heard.
I found living in London very expensive, depressing and lonely although I was surrounded by millions of people.

I have nothing to say about the UK in general as I've never lived anywhere else but London but I was glad to get out.

I'm a Swiss girl through and through and I will eventually move back there. That's where my heart is. (maybe I should change my name to Heidi)

If I had the money I'd move out to Portugal tomorrow. At my age I've fewer years ahead of me than behind me and it'd be nice to spend them in a nice warm country.

Perhaps I should consider buying a property next door to pm . . . . I know exactly where he lives! That'll devalue his property overnight.

OK, seriously? I would consider renting somewhere for a year. Live as near to as you can to where you might want to live eventually; and see if you like it. If it all goes pear-shaped, no big loss and at least you can say; we tried. Never regret the things you did - regret the things you didn't do.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could take all the good bits from all round the world together with the people and put them on an island with no politics etc etc...ah well one can only but dream.....but oh what a lovely lovely dream...yummy, yummy and yummy.
