Why dont you go by train?. We had 3 days in Lisbon in early September.
We caught the train in Tunes and the journey was about 3 hours. The cost was about 17 euros each way 1st class. This was one of the best train trips that we have done. We had prebooked seats 2 days earlier and had air conditioning, extra wide seats and a folding table between us. The next carriage was the buffet car which was also conveinient. The station was in the middle of Lisbon. We used taxis all the time and the average fare was only 5/6 euros. Try it

baggyw, you seem to know your onions when it comes to trains
Would you be so kind as to supply me with some train info for the FAQs? Please PM me if you are willing to do it for me.
PS: If anyone else would like to do it too I would be very grateful - the more the merrier. I can then edit them into some useful info.

Oh and by the way here is the bus web site for long distance coach journeys:
http://www.rede-expressos.pt/
The buses are cheap and good too and take you right into the heart of Lisboa.

Did the trip by bus (Eva) from Portimao. Was frightening experience. The driver continually fiddled with the remote control for the DVD and constantly tried to watch the film! He seemed pre-occupied and made strange mannerisms, turning his eyes up and crossing them - no this is not a wind-up. After several times drifting in front of other vehicles and crossing the "rumble" strip at least 20 times, he then headed for the hard shoulder while arguing some passengers at the back (he was straining his neck round so he could look at them while they shouted at each other!). I had to shout "Lookout!" to get his attention and he pulled the bus back onto the lane just in time! He also did his paperwork whilst driving and had a race with a female driver when we got into Lisboa!!! I just thanked God every time another 1/2 hour passed and we were still alive. On leaving the bus, I recorded the reg. no on my mobile and wrote to Eva. This was on 18th September and haven't heard a word from them yet. I dont recommend the bus.

Frightening journey! Isn't it fairer to say that you don't reccommend the bus driver?
I had a similar, hairy bus experience in Turkey many years ago (http://www.backgammon-biba.co.uk/TurkeyTrip.htm) and to this day it is etched into my memory.
