Consumption of legal drugs shoots up

The legal consumption of anti-depressants, sedatives and tranquillisers has shot up in recent years and is going out of the control of specialists. This increase reflects the growing numbers of cases of depression, an illness which manifests itself in the behaviour and the quality of life of the population.
In 2004, some 145,000 packs of psychotonics and anti-depressants were sold in the Algarve, and more than 357,000 of hypnotic sedatives and tranquillisers, 11,000 more than in the previous year, according to INFARMED data to which the Algarve Observer has had access. The sale of anti-depressants has increased threefold in the last ten years and the demand for tranquillisers has almost doubled.
The former regional director of the Institute of Drugs and Drug Addiction (IDT), Jaime Ferreira, said that access to anti-depressants, sedatives and tranquillisers is becoming more widespread, both with and without the use of prescriptions.
According to Jaime Ferreira, who is qualified in psychiatric nursing, the mass consumption of benzodiazepines is due to them being prescribed by family doctors. The specialist added that it is a way of family medicine trying to solve problems of a social nature by using medicaments, in particular psychological problems, which are caused by dysfunctions in the surrounding environment.
A number of studies carried out under the International Organ for Drugs Control confirm that the use of drugs is something that is becoming more and more common. Given this situation, Jaime Ferreira points to the lack of coherence between social policies and to measures taken which are of an economic nature, as they aim for savings or artificial reductions in costs, with serious repercussions in the long term.
The use of psychotropic substances to correct disturbances of mood or behaviour is something that is more and more socially acceptable, the former regional director of the IDT said. And he drew attention to the fact that people are adopting an attitude of passively consuming drugs as the most effective one, instead of facing up to reality and working to find non-artificial solutions.
Jaime Ferreira considers the increasing consumption of medicaments to be a public health problem and warned that the practice of treating the symptoms, to the detriment of measures that are slower but have a greater chance of success, only leads to false solutions. It also has a significant impact on health expenditure and on family budgets.
