TRAVEL
Portugal to open up southwest coast to tourism

CanWest News Service

October 1, 2005

LISBON -- Demolition experts have imploded two 30-year-old tower blocks south of Lisbon to clear the way for a project that is to open up Portugal's unspoiled southwest coast to large-scale tourism development.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates detonated the explosive charges to collapse the 16-storey cement blocks in Troia, a sandy peninsula 50 kilometres south of Lisbon.

Portuguese company Sonae plans to build a resort with more than 1,000 beds, a casino, meeting centre and vacation homes.

Developers hope the region will rival the southern Algarve coast, one of Europe's top vacation destinations, but environmental groups fear the projects will ruin the countryside.

Martin.

I found your description of walking on roofs very sad and therefore, perfectly akin with what you are saying.

Cowboy has previously quoted an old Texas saying:-

" The meek will inherit the earth but the strong will hold the mineral rights". What a world!

It's just south of Lisbon so its hardly going to ruin the whole south west coast. It's not really ones of Portugal's most beautiful places so I don't understand what the fuss is about?

well the point is ...that once the algarve was descibed as europes best kept secret..now its almost one town from faro to portimao....so having built up this place to the state where if you buy your 250 sq metre villa on its 350 metre plot (true seen many) the developers are now moving on.....and on ..and dont tell me in 30 years times you dont find the whole length of the atlantic coast a series of golf course hotel,,etc etc.

Its a bit too late to turn the clock back now. Cvo.com wouldn't exist if there hadn't been any development in the Algarve so really its hypocritical to complain about this epecially if its expats doing all the complaining :?

Guest,

Of course you do have a point, but many have brought "original" properties, some of us love the countryside and/or near villages such as old fishing villages. and beautiful old Algarvian cottages and houses.

Of course to some degree we all have to accept a certain degree of development and improvement. But come on now, whats happening in Portugal, such as a glutton of golf courses is such a shame.

Anyway you have your opinion and I have mine. Amen.

such development is not needed..its only needed by developers wanting to build more and more and stupid camaras issueing licences for such development as a means to produce income...as nightrider says all (including me) accept development BUT we have now reached the stage as one portuguese friend told me a few years ago, that there are enough homes in Portugal for a population of 30 million but only 10 million live here...another portuguese friend told me that on tv, there had been an architect who said that if all the developments that are planned were then built, there would be enough houses for a population of 90 million....frankly it has nothing to do with being foreign or whatever ..it has to do with unbridled consumption of earths resources....with no one having the courage to say "chega"
