taking dogs to portugal
Hi all,
We are moving to the algarve soon and intend to bring our dog, he's fairly old and don't intend to bring him back to the UK. Does anyone know if we need a pet passport? I have been told if he doesn't come back to the UK we won't need one. Look forward to your replies.
Thanks Pete

Re: taking dogs to portugal
While I appreciate that you say your dog is old and that you do not intend to take him back to the Uk. I would strongly urge you to obtain a pet passport and by doing so your dog's vet will give him a thorough check up, a rabbies jab and blood tests. Your dog will also be microchipped.
Your vet might even suggest that you commence the below mentioned routines for protecting your dog against heart worm, sand fly, ticks etc.
We have a very sensitive G.Shephard and literally drove for his sake from the UK to Portugal, carefully planning our trip and hotels which permitted dogs.
Once here, we found a very good vet Dra Kirsten Peters at Guia
Tel No: 289 561 683. Emergency 96 9018909:
Officially a dog has to be registered at the local Parish Council Office and they will wish to see your vet's Rabies Jab etc certificate.
Once here, you will need to start your dog on preventation for:
Heart Worm.. I use Interceptor once a month tablet.
Ticks, flees etc..I use a Scalibor collar all year round
Ticks etc........I use Advantix also for ticks during the spring and summer months.
Make sure your dog has a tag on with your telephone number in Portugal.
Never make the mistake of leaving the dog in the car.
If in the countryside, we keep our dogs on the lead, several have been poisioned and pedigree stolen.
If you need any other information please do let me know.

Seems like 'Guest above has dogs contributing to the state of our streets and beaches
It is not as simple as just being disgusting, dog excretement is also a danger to babies, young children and pregnant mothers
Sorry 'Guest' but I have a brilliant life that most people could only wish for (dog free

Dogs like children (I have both) are as well behaved as their parents teach them to be and lets face it there are some pretty awfully behaved children about, not to mention their parents. One recently hitting me in the face with a rubber arrow which made my eye water. This happened whilst I was eating my lunch with friends in Lagos and what did the parents do, laugh. So do I then dislike every child, of course not.
Yes I totally agree with regard owners allowing dogs in the UK to soil pavements and playgrounds, but like so many things in life, it's always those thoughtless owners, who spoil it for all us caring owners. As for here in Portugal, I am sure that there are other caring people like me who find it desparately upsetting at the very poor state of some of the dogs out here, but you see they have no owners and therefore have never been taught and here we go again the "apathy" of the Portuguese to do anything about assisting the situation.
Whilst on such a subject of "tarring" with the same brush:- Last night I watch on BBC3 "War of the Gypsies". A group of "Irish Travellers" between them had brought a field (Green Belt) in Essex and without planning permission in 3 yrs had placed a considerable amount of mobile homes on. The locals and council had served an eviction order on them. But what infuriates me is that I am a desendent of a very proud Romany
family, in otherwords true Gypsies. Yet the general public if asked I have no doubt whatsoever would view those individuals who camp all over the countryside without permission and leave their mess for others to clean up as Gypsies "the very title of the documentory" when they are most definately not. So I ask you do you think that every Romany Gypsy should be tarred with the same brush!
True Romanies these days of course are like any other, in all walks of life and countless famous people in showbusiness. I.e. Gypsies throughout generations have always been entertainers.
My point is Guests PLEASE don't judge everyone and every dog owner by the same cover. That is an ugly word and it's called PREJUDICE.
As for my German Shephards they give me so much love and affection and I would place my life, family and home with them and how many fingers can you hold up to count how many human beings now days you could place that trust in.
Dogs are man's best friend, they are used in mine fields, the rescue & search services, the blind, protection for the police and arm forces and therefore indirectly we the public, drugs, oap residences and in some parts of the world a life line "huskies" etc etc etc . Dogs have won bravery awards for saving CHILDRENS LIVES and others etc etc etc.
Teach your child the word NO and exactly what they can or cannot touch
and if they are to young to understand that, what the hell are they doing on a pavement or a park on their own? As for pregnant mothers, I am assuming that most can see and have a brain in their head.
Sorry but I am sick and tired of hearing this stupid arguement.
By the way Dogs were on this earth long before us.

I was not going to take the trouble to answer your post as it is an old hackneyed subject, thought most people were better informed these days, but then.... our dogs and many others, are cared for, trained and do not soil the streets as like all responsible owners, we clean up after them and as they have all their 'jabs' are no health threat to anyone.
The poor strays out here do not know any better,( although there are people here doing sterling work to help the situation) unlike the people who come here, fouling the roads and beaches

We are also moving to Cvo soon & bringing with us (probably much to the digust of a certaing guest) our 2 dogs & a very old cat, I contacted DEFRA & was told that all the animals need a pet passport regardless of whether they would be coming back or not, much to our surprise as we had only had the dogs passported thinking that the cat would end her days in the sun & not require one. In fact we have to take the cat next week for her blood test to see if the rabies vacine took, that'll be fun - last time she needed a blood test it took 4 of us to hold her down & she still bent the hypodermic.
On the subjects of dogs making a disgusting mess it is the fault of the owners who will not pick up after or control their animals, mind you I have seen parents dig a hole in the sand on the beach allow their child to defecate in it & then cover it over with sand. The mentality of some people is absolutely amazing

AFKA1, I am hoping Michael, Jeremy or Cowboy will post a picture of a Doggie reading or better still one peeing all over said Guest shoesAFKA1 wrote:With you on that one Nightrider.
Also maybe we could start up a training camp to teach all the stray dogs to read, then they will understand where they can take a dump without having to clear up after themselves
ps I have got to teach myself how to send attachments
Dogology for ever
