[quote="Graham"]I fully expect to get shot for this,

Graham you have obviously done some homework and if correct one cannot argue with that. But Surrey (and areas) mentioned as far as I am aware does not have a pending water problem and the wildlife and countryside is protected in the UK and for the use of everyone.

So you say that you do not mind if another 2 or 3 golf courses etc are constructed on what was ecological land and only for those who play golf. The project no doubt will add to severe water problems and no more bunnies & birds etc. Will you still sit on the fence, when it is man's turn. But then no doubt like me you won't be around. So why should we care :?: :?: :?:

Someone told me once which made perfect sense "that we are just the caretakers of the earth", well if that is so, we have not made a very good job of it so far. So if you don't mind and I repeat myself, this particluar project is utterley disgraceful. but not :o

This is a quote from the Oceanico website:

<<THE O'CONNOR COURSE

Perfectly complementing the Faldo Course whilst taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside, this course offers no less of a challenge. Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary. >>

Also, I have heard that the plan is to employ and train locals into positions of more than just minimum wage grounds keepers or bar staff.

Apart from the problems with water, what are the main objections for golf courses? They are pleasant to look at, its not like another 100,000 buildings being built and then possibly left ugly and empty.

No objection to Golf Courses whatsoever, which give many people great enjoyment.

As for the rest of the brain washing jargon, those with reasonable savey will work it out for themselves..... with regard the location, water, wildlife etc.......of this particular project.

Nightrider - where in my post did I say that do not mind more golf courses being built? Please do not put words in my mouth

I just pointed out that the statement about the Algarve being 'probably' the most densely populated with golf courses in the world was way off target, and therefore should not be used as a fact in the debate.

Yes, I did my homework (10 minutes on Google!), and astonishingly for those that think picking Surrey was cheating, the whole of the Briish Isles has 2,500 golf courses over a land mass of 234,000 square km, a course for every 93 sq km - over double that of the Algarve currently - but we don't hear much complaining about the lovely rural landscape in the UK being ruined.

My personal view is that I only ever play one course - Gramacho (call me boring but it is local and I like it) so building further courses is of no interest to me on that level BUT I love the Algarve and want to see it and it's population prosper.

For the Algarve to move on economically (and I don't think staying where it is is viable in the long term with the threats coming to it from new Eastern European countries) it needs to do something - however all forms of change inevitably come with an 'opportunity cost' - the question is what form of development will bring the greatest benefit to the Algarve at the least cost, and indeed can these costs (environmental and otherwise) be reduced or mitigated.

So how about some positive thinking - what can be done to improve the current situation (apart from sacking every civil servant), and what would bring more benefits than further golf courses and villas?

I do not pretend to have an answer, but like TBBR like to keep an open mind on the issue and base a judgement on fact, not hype or nimbyism. (Can I enter this under N on another subject?)

I look forward to some interesting suggestions

Quote Graham. I do not say that this is a good or a bad thing. But they are the facts.

Coming from the Surrey Countryside, I would have had to travel some miles to find á Golf course. But to be fair there are I have no doubt several. But one has to take into consideration the English climate/lush enviromental surroundings (caused by WATER) which are facts, that the Algarve and this particular location site does not have by any stretched of the imagination.

As for the rest of the brain washing jargon this development is pumping out, those with a little savey will work it out for themselves.

Graham, no offence was intended and if taken then please accept my very humble apology. :)

Spoke to Portuguese aquaintence about this development , he was surprised to say the least , given the water problems.
But a project like this would have been submitted years ago when there was plenty of water.

He also said that the local pundits are forcasting a very wet winter ???

AS we wait for our project approval ( 3 months to date ) for a single Villa I ind it hard to beleive that something of this scale would not have been known about for months if not years.

Construction ( in theory ) cannot start without FULL approvals and again on this scale I would think must conform to the rules.

Is it suggested that it has come as a surprise to many ??

The Algarve is a tourism area, much of it anyway. For good or evil, that is the way it has developed, and a great deal of revenue accrues to the Portuguese state because of it. It is therefore, not surprising that those associated with tourism would wish to develop it, and as golfing developments seem to be most popular just now, this new one is just one more developed by those who think that they can make a go of it.

We ought to expect the authorities to protect the area from over-exploitation, and have a care about water supplies, planning and zoning. If the authorities are not doing their job properly, it is a matter for the voters, and of course it is perfectly proper for discussions to be held about the matter, and criticisms to be made.

It is understandable that those who see their way of life changing as a result of this and other developments would object, sometimes just because they don't wish changes, but other times for very good reasons.

Continuing development in a area like this,if of good quality, properly regulated, is generally considered a good thing, from an economic point of view, and if it suddenly stopped, you could be sure that the tourism authorities would be out trying to discover what was wrong, and how they could make it right.

It is a pity, in many ways, that things like this are such a trouble to many, and while I sympathise with them on a personal level, I have to say that, in my opinion, developments such as this are a benefit to the area, all things considered.

TBBR I am pleased to see that you have now found your property and hopefully you will not have to wait much longer for your planning approval. I.e. I thought you was still looking :!:
