Recommended Restaurants

We are coming out to CVO in a couple of weeks after a break of 3-4 years. Chefs/owners change a lot in that time. Would anyone care to give recommendations of say their top 5 places? Any style, traditional, Italian, Indian, Chinese - anything really, where good food is served.

I think it's mostly down to personal taste but I will give you my favourite restaurants.

Maxime's
L'Orange
Casa Palmeira

The first two I would go more for a special occasion. The last one does really nice portuguese cuisine.

If you have a car, there is also a nice restaurant near Benagil called O Carlo

Choices are very personal, but Ele & Ela's remains our favourite, followed by L'Orange. For good, but not exceptional quality, at reasonable prices, we would choose Chef Antonio's and Lanterna Velha. They both have the advantage of plenty of outside space for the summer months.

Please try the Thai restaraunt which is just up the hill that runs alongside O' Cantino. Very impressive and the best Thai I have been to, anywhere.

I am with you on that one Mike - just hope that he can get a sign up and steer everyone away from the mediocre Chinese restaurants

Also finally got round to visiting the Village Inn - this has now been added to my 'favourites' list.

Don't Forget Primavera still the same owners since time began.... always the same standard and service- superb value for pasta dishes. Probably our favourite.....

We also like the Indian halfway up the hill on the right hand side, they are actually from northern Indian and not Bangladesh as we get here in the UK, food is really good and quite reasonable.

Many thanks for all of your replies - greatly appreciated. We look forward to trying your recommendations. It's a shame some enterprising computer literate soul couldn't come up with a map of the area with a legend showing the location of all of the restaurants. It would be a welcome addition to the maps section of this site. 'Where is it?' seems to be about the most commonly asked question.

I agree with Graham (posted Aug 17) - you ought to try the Village Inn. Have been going here for a number of years now and the food and the service from Cathy, a charming Canadian lady, are excelent. Unfortunately have not had chance to go so far this year and I assume nothing has changed. If you want instructions to find it please ask.

Also try Marisqueira (near the top of the hill, Estrada do Farol, immediately
past the big new hotel). We have used this on a regular basis for several years and have never yet been disappointed. Excellent seafood. Need to get there fairly early or book.
