Using Laptops

I would like to bring my laptop with me next time I come over but our house is only wired for a normal telephone. I am a bit thick about wiring etc of computers but can anyone tell me if I simply plug the laptop into the telephone socket or do I need to have someone wire it for me? If the worst came to the worst is there a wifi cafe I can use to plug in?

We've not long moved here, so I'm still learning these things myself. However, do know that you need to buy a package fom an Internet Provider PT, SAPO etc. Also, you would need to check from your telephone service provider that you have an ADSL connection. AND, the cables are different here they have computer like plugs, not the thin ones used for telephone sockets in britain. Hope this helps.

it is very simple
go to www.clix.pt click on ""ajuda"" go to the botom of that page and click on english
do this at home because there you have internet and than you click instant access and intall
in portugal you can plug in an ordinary telephone socket in the telephone
line you only have to pay for a local call when you are on internet

Ellie - clix is free so there is no charge for internet access. The only cost you will incurr is for the actual phone call and this will of course be charged to your Portugal bill

Setting up clix.pt will automatically make it your default connection. You need to remember to change back when you return to the UK. This is not a problem you can have any number of ISPs and your settings will be remembered for your next visit. Just remember to tick the correct default. If you plan to e mail you will need to make changes in your "accounts" in OE too. You may need to set up a clix e mail account to send, you can normally receive e mails from other ISPs. Portuguese cables are the same as USA fittings and are readily available in the UK

Thank you both (and others) for all your help on this matter. Since our house is rented in the summer, I have had another thought. How can I stop clients from plugging their laptops into our telephone line if they have also set up clix.pt? Is there a block I can put on the telephone? Any help would be appreciated.

Well, Ellie 2, do you really want to stop guests connecting or is this perhaps an added "service" that you may want to offer ?

We had a very simple phone meter installed (it came from the PTT and it costs a few Euro's per month added on to the fixed line rental charges). You can then recoup the phone charges as well as offering the service. We have marked up the rate per unit a small amount to cover the rental cost of the meter, and we have to trust the management company to zero it and take a reading at the end of each rental period. Four years later, and so far, so good.

And if your laptop does not already have an ISP set up how do you load CLIX ? Do they provide CD ROM's?
