Wondering if I have made a mistake?

We too have have viewed the forum and wondered if it is sometimes used by some to keep the " good things " about the algarve to them selves by emphasising the bad ( which are probably no worse trhan any where else ).
Al we know is that when again in a few weeks we are closing our apartment door it will not be with a sense of relief but with a deep wih that we could stay a lot longer.

Perhpas some regular contributors could think first before going into print and realise that their comments ( no doubt expressed with the best intentions ) could be putting visitors/potential residents off!!!.

( or is that the plan ???)

Or maybe they are telling the truth and the others are living in cloud cuckoo land. I reckon the Algarve's days are numbered and that the new EU members will attract huge numbers of visitors in the near future. There will be no problem with water then for the region, there'll be nobody about to want it

anyway … ididntdoit …. I am pleased to hear about your forthcoming holiday: a week in Tavira followed by a week in cvo eh! excellent!

And now we are all looking forward to reading your diary …. I think you will find Tavira perfectly pleasant with lots of churches and things to visit, and in cvo you are gonna have a ball. But shush don’t tell everyone; save it for us ….. looking forward to it

hey realist read the news, the drought is not only affecting portugal and spain, you must be the one that thinks that balcans and eastern block is the paradise, but they are suffering the drought as well as iberia, if you don't like don't go there (CARVOEIRO) at least let people get their own opinions...

I too must say that we as a family who will be staying in CVO in a couple of weeks time, were wondering if perhaps we had made an error of judgment when I came accross a large amount of negitive posts, but now I hope after reading this that we have made a good choice & will enjoy our 1st holiday in Portugal,

can i please ask a question, whats the bus service like, as when we go on holiday, I like to have a break from driving but have been told by a few peaple that the only way to get arround is to hire a car.

if so then I will be the 1st time that I have driven on the wrong side of the road.

The only mistake you might have is why has it taken you so long to holiday in Portugal. Its not everyones cup of tea but if you like it, you like it , if you dont then who knows. Enjoy enjoy enjoy it's a wonderful country, with lots of wonderful people, a climate like no other, excellent food and wine and once visited 'hooked' for life. sorry can't comment about the bus service as we always hire a car, other half drives I navigate, and no we don't get lost too often. looking forward to the holiday, although just checked out the temps on one weather channel & they rekon 110 deg, if its really that hot then I think I will melt

maybe it will cool down a bit by the 21st when was the last time you got rain ?

Dont be put off by the temps, the Atlantic breeze has a cooling efect and makes the climate very pleasant. The one big mistake us 'Brits' make is confusing temperature with humidity, here off the south coast of UK it can be 18c and steaming, in Carvoeiro we feel comfortable with the air temp, whether its 8c or 35c, once out there slow down and enjoy your wonderful holiday. I don't think people are deliberately trying to put others off from coming here on this forum and I don't think they are making things up or exaggerating their stories. People will have different experiences of wherever they go...some good...some bad...sorry I know I am stating the obvious. The forum is a way of exchanging their experiences, trying to gain help and opinions from others or simply to just vent off.

I was told several things by expats when I first came here, but I decided to be open minded and experience things for myself. I have to say that the majority of what they advised turned out to be true. As I said in my earlier post on this topic, holidaying here and living here are worlds apart. The forum however is for both residents and holidaymakers so there will be a merging of the two.

There is a danger that on holiday people see things through rose tinted specs, especially when the sun is shining and the wine is flowing. In my opinion the best advice for those thinking of coming to live in the Algarve is to rent for a long time first and travel around the areas to get a good feel for the place and if it really is for you. Then you can experience life as it really is and not like it is on holiday and you won't have committed yourself by purchasing a property in an area you thought was great for a 2 week vacation but awful to live on a daily basis. I have spoken to many expats about this and often they said they were fine for a few weeks/months but then after about 3 to 6 months started feeling very homesick to the point of crying and longing to return to where they came from. Most go through this and come out the other side but some don't...so renting gives you that option.

Only time will tell if the Algarve will remain more or less as it is or change beyond our recognition. Some won't be bothered by it, some will welcome it and others may decide to move on to pastures new. Whatever happens it will be an experience....

Good for you...glad you are happy in your new environment but I think you would agree that you had many years of experience of the Algarve before you finally up sticks and moved permanently...so you knew what to expect and you knew you liked it.

I get bored very easily...so for me spending time here, some time in the UK and some time in Spain and Italy to visit mates is great. I am lucky I suppose that I don't have any real commitments at the moment.

After visiting Lisbon last October (in the pouring rain) I found this web site
and after brousing for a few days. Booked my Villa through it, and now my airport transfer. I certainly havn't been put off. In fact in 24hrs time
I will be at Gatwick and on my way. First visit for the whole family to
the Algarve.....Can't wait

I love travelling too. I'm planning to go to South America next year. Haven't been there yet.

It was very nice meeting you too. I feel so much better today despite a slight fuzziness in the brain area (now I wonder what that was due to)
