Wondering if I have made a mistake?

After reading posts on this forum I am starting to wonder if I have made a mistake in booking a holiday in Carvoeiro later this month!
Taking into account the posts on, crime, high prices, lack of water, officials interested only in profit, fires, corrupt police, etc. etc., Clacton on Sea is starting to look good !!

So there is no crime in Clacton, its cheap, the sea water is great, you spend time with the officials whilst on holiday and you will wish there were fires just to keep warm.

A large percentage of people who use this forum do so because they love CVO.

Yes crime appears to be on the increase but if you use your common sense you are unlikely to be affected and the crime rate is still relatively low.

Prices have increased but have you been to the UK's coast recently? In some places they are charging £3.50 for a pint of lager. You can still buy beer in CVO for less than 1.5 EUR.

I've been to CVO dozens of times, I have never once worried if an official is making profit from his/her actions - I'm sure the tour operators don't have a section in their brochures that ranks holiday resorts on the amount of profit officials make!!

As for the fires CVO is usually well away from any, you may be affected if you travel up towards Monchique.

Corrupt police? Tell me where in the world there isn't any.

Go to CVO you won't find anywhere better.

Living somewhere and dealing with the ups and downs of daily life and going somewhere on holiday are worlds apart...come on holiday and enjoy yourself.

Like others have said, on holiday I don't think a corrupt council official etc is something you are likely to have to bother about. The only thing you should take notice of is the "petty" crime...but that is a fact of life in any resort in Europe nowadays...where opportunists target tourists as easy pickings...just be careful about locking up securely (as you would at home) and keeping valuables on you at all times or locked in a secure safe, as opposed to lying around on tables in villas or in hire cars etc and I am sure you will be fine!

That's a bit more positive, begun to think it was all doom & gloom.
I'm certainly hoping it's nice relaxing warm sunny place, that's the point of visiting. Am staying in Tavira for 1st week & in Carvoeiro for 2nd.
I know that everywhere has it's problems nowadays but there are very few in rural Devon, I would have to be pretty desperate before going to Clacton!
It's just that the general theme on this forum seems to be downbeat, let's have more praising the good points.
I honestly think that if I had found & studied posts on here before booking it might have put me off, yet the place looks really nice.

We have an apartment in CVO and have spent many a happy visit. Again it's the common sense approach, do as you would do with your own property, lock it up before you go out, keep valuables with you or well away from view.
This is going on all over popular European resorts and not just CVO. It's just the locals I think tend to notice it more as they live there. I feel safer in CVO and Holland, where we live. As a British ex pat I'm stunned at the level of violence happening in the UK at the moment, now that's something to worry about.
Come on over you'll have a great time, lovely bars, good restaurants to choose from and great little beach to chil out on.... honest

Quite understand, ididntdoit, that you read some negative comments. The problem is that most of us CVO.COM Forum regulars are already totally committed to CVO and love it ! It would be boring if we just went banging on how fabulous it is (and it is !)

Glad we have reassured you ididntdoit. Be interesting for you to let us all know what you thought after your 2 week visit to Tavira and Carvoeiro.

I think that whilst the forum can get downbeat at times, with us all moaning on and venting our frustrations about life here, there is also a lot of humour dotted in between, plus a lot of useful information and informed people giving their opinions. I certainly wouldn't have bothered to register and post if it was all sugar and spice and G moderated anything slightly controversial or negative...it just wouldn't be realistic.

The positives are that today it is steaming hot, with clear blue skies and I'm going for a beer this evening

I feel so safe walking about CVO on my own, something I don't always feel happy about in this country and certainly did'nt when in Spain. I think alot of the problem is (as already stated elsewhere) due to the influx of Eastern Europeans, some of whom are very hard working but quite a few are just common criminals who think the rest of us Europeans are easy targets
Just be careful and have a super holiday, I shall be surprised if you don't fall under the spell of Carvoeiro like most of us have

hmmm .... IMHO …. some forum members and their waggish guests are happy to display their fine-tuned mix of satire and irony, a condition caused by daytime drinking and too much sun.
