Stick with the bank, tourist rate today was about 1.39. Sounds like they are offering the buying back rate!!

Confused as to rates quoted.

If the official bank exchange rate ( NOT TOURIST ) is 1.45 to the £ the best 3 months against forcasted declining euro would only be a couple of cents more and for V large quantities ( we buy /sell fwd in our business ).

The rates quoted are for SELLING euros not BUYING.

Unless of course its not through the recognised markets ???

Between 17th - 30th June the buy rate of the Euro was 1.60, the company i work for bought in large quantaties of Euro at that time so i was then able to reseve some for myself at 1.58 rate. Around the middle of July the buy rate dropped to about 1.55 they bought more in at that time so i bought some more at 1.525.

Youll only get about 1.42 today...

I find the figure 1.60 surprising as the highest the pound has been over the last 52 weeks is 1.52020. Mike

We are buying the euro today at 1.55. If i was to buy some in at that rate my manager would sell them to me at 1.53. as i said around the middle of july we were buying them in at 1.60 thats why i got such a good deal. We get our rates from Barclays.

Then please buy some for us, we will pay 66p/euro still giving you a profit.

Please let us know how to go about it.

I was shadowing the exchange rate in June because I needed to change a large amount of sterling. At that time the interbank rate did not go much above 1.52 and the banks take a commission of typically 0.006 on that rate, negotiable if you are looking to make large transactions.

At the time the pundits were forecasting that the euro would fall through the floor but this has not happened and it has since strengthened against the pound. The forward buy rates quoted look extremely generous even allowing for the forecast decline of the euro and this illustrates how difficult it is for the layman to make sense or profit out of the exchange rate markets.

Try flipping a coin - it will give you just as accurate a guess as anyone else's - lots of learned words and so on but its all guesswork (if we know what tomorrow held there would have been 77 million winners on the Euro milhoes last week !)
