"Barking dogs" - a problem all over the place - if its any consolation you do get used to it - it doesnt trouble me now half as much as it did 3 years ago when we first moved in.
I've given up on the issue myself - tried to get some sense from dog owners but its a complete waste of time.
Our PT neighbours say they were kept awake by trains when they first moved in - about one small train every couple of hours that is !! - we never even noticed them. Obviously the locals are brought up on dog noise and dont even seem to know it exists - how that can square with the question of them supposedly being guard dogs escapes me ! - Its just like the early days of car alarms in the UK when everyone regarded them as noise pollution and completely ignored them as warnings !

only wish I could guest.....
but PLEASE don't talk to me about barking dogs!!!!
we did have thoughts on buying one a while ago.......but think definitely not so now.....
the cacophony of sound here with the 'dogs chorus' surrounding us is unbearable at times..
a new neighbour(nextdoor but one)starting taking in strays..she ended up with around 18 maybe more..it was awful not just the incessant barking but their rushing to the fence as soon as someone/anyone 'tiptoes' past has almost caused accidents..young woman almost thrown from her horse!
Then our lovely quiet neighbours moved..and recent new ones have what H calls '2 hairy mosquitoes' on strings..one of which sounds as if its swallowed a squeaker..they join in with the 'pack'!!
Cockerals I don't mind...in Carvoeiro got used to that...and I ended up counting the cocks crowing and drifted off to sleep(bit like counting sheep...)..
So dogs are off the list now.....cats are quieter aren't they..so maybe will opt for a nice puss instead

H would be happy to see the demise of 'frogs/toads/newts'etc.that may be lurking in the garden....they give him the eebyjeebies
Lizz..your catapult sounds harsh dear....but I have given the pussies an odd squirt with the hose when they're after the birdies...a gentle shock treatment
..
My boxer 'Percy' used to love eating spiders

Cats also kill mice, rats and big hairy spiders, an advantage if you ask some people who are sick of rat droppings on their front porch or spider webs in their front door.Lizz wrote:Only problem with cats is that they chose our garden as their communal loo.
Not much fun when gardening.
Roled up balls of aluminium foil fired from catapult does discourage them for a while.
Plus dogs don,t kill birds , frogs and newts fro fun
As for the loo, I can see where my cats prefer to go, the oleanders are almost twice the size of those around the rest of the garden
