Dolphins

Can anyone tell me of the likelyhood of seeing dolphins off the coast/boat trip from Carvoerio this August?
Every boat trip I have been on everywhere else, no matter where, has been unlucky!
I would love to see dolphins in the wild.....

This is not what you want to hear but the last time (May 2005) I was on a 3 hour cruise from Vilamoura, I asked the Portuguese captain about seeing dolphins off the Algarve coast and he just laughed and said they should rename it from Dolphin Watch to Dolphin Search as they very rarely see them.Sorry.

I saw dolphins last year off Algar Seco - I think it was about April - I'm not sure whether it's seasonal so I don't know if you'll see them in August.

we went on dolphin safari trip from portimao marina (30 euros) for approx 2 hour trip which takes you out 10 miles on very very fast speed boat...yes we saw dolhins and a whale...best time is in morning.

If you want to see dolphins on a fairly guaranteed basis - go to Gibraltar - we have been several times and seen them every time. Fantastic. Went from Lagos and did a lot of speeding around and saw absolutely nothing - boat was very uncomfortable and crowded and you had to sit down all the time. In Gib you could walk around the boat and dangle your feet in the water if you wanted!! And cheaper!!!

Pretty easy to read Kelly's note.
I've never heard anyone equating culture with not abbreviating spelling before. I suppose the philistines were notorious for over exuberance in the use of excessive abbreviation. I for one, make every endeavour to utilise the longest available word in any particular circumstance and, indeed, try to manufacture, as it were, each and every sentence to achieve the maximum tautological effect.

I have no recollection at all of seeing any post in this inestimable forum that could possibly be regarded as having an high degree of culture as it's main raison d'etre.

I would note in closing that the chance of seeing a dolphin actually fkin are fairly small.

I wonder. If the two nice boys above were dangled off the back of the boat would they actually attract a dolphin or two?

If not then perhaps a shark.

i don't know about carvoeiro... but i have seen like 30 dolphins speeding just off my boat, it was an amazing view! It was like 1,5 miles offshore the Culatra Island (which is about 3 miles offshore Olhão and Faro, its Ria Formosa). It was in the morning (when the sea is usualy very calm) on a regular summer day. I also saw a flyer fish... unbelieveble! I strongly recommend a boat trip offshore the Culatra Island, from its eastern tip (Ponta da culatra, AMAZING sandbanks extending almost a mile offshore the island) to its western tip (Ilha do Farol, recognized by the huge lighthouse)... the view of the beachline is gorgeous (completely deserted even in august) and there's a chance of seeing dolphins if the trip is made like 1 mile offshore the beach, but its also amazing to do it at about 300m from the beach at high tide, the water is still "shallow" 3-5m but its so clear and 100% white sandy bottom... it seems like a big pool... out of this world! Here is a clue to still hidden spots in Algarve

Just got back from Algarve this afternoon!

Went on a boat trip from Villamoura and saw Dolphins - fantastic!

Cost 110 euro for 2 adults and 2 children - high powered RIB seating 12 - the "skipper" was great fun and made it a very exciting trip - highly recommended.

Hi Stan, There's a boat that runs out of Lagos marina which guarantee's that you will see the dolphins, if not, then they will take you out again untill you do, at no cost.
I have seen dolphins quite regular whils fishing of Lagos.

Have a look at the item about coastal boats - Osiris from Portimao normally finds them
