Typing and spelling.

Good point... the net is international.DaGi wrote:Have mercy on the foreigners !! We all do our best to express ourselves in this beautiful language, but sometimes we do make errors.![]()
Also, it has users of all ages, classes and levels of education.
Having said that, I admit that I do note how well a poster writes when I decide how much weight I give to his/her opinion.
Why would you use a ‘ in I’ll wouldn't it be better to use a 'No use of ‘ in ‘I’ll’.
I can be a pedant too (or should that be pendant?)
The important thing is that people are communicating. Does it really matter if the punctuation is not 100%?
For many of the people using this site English is not their first language and why should it be it is a site dedicated to a "village" in southern Portugal.
If I posted on a Portuguese site the spelling would be rubbish, the grammar worse and forget the punctuation!
IMO it is the content of the post that is important not ensuring that it would pass the inspection of a 1950's English teacher

I must admit that when I post in this Forum, out of sheer laziness I don't always type correctly. But with the demise of letter writing these days and with the advent of texting and e-mail, the English language is often abused,so spelling, grammar and punctuation should really be given attention so that younger generations and foreigners can learn. I cringe sometimes when I see the spelling mistakes on this Forum but then I am not a great typist and mistakes are easy to make and I don't concern myself too much about it. I suppose some younger person (i.e below 30 something!) will post and say that with computers you dont need to write letters and they do all the spell checks etc for you.
But in no way should people who struggle with spelling etc be made to feel reluctant to post - afraid of some criticism. Communication is the key and all people can contribute something worthwhile. Anyway, that's enough of me droning on at this time of night......Boa Noite!

Thank you Heini, I owe it all to verbosity and the other posters here.heini wrote:I agree, cowboy (You should have seen the spelling mistake I made typing your name - it would have served for at least 100 replies of the innuendo/nasty type)
I'll take that as a compliment, Heini... You could always PM those spelling mistakes to me. LOL
Congratulations on achieving "veteran" and gold star status on this board!
And Steen, of course....after all, Steen not only started this site (and I see others are starting copy the idea), but he didn't ban me from this site forever.... although there were times (during the "Lonesome Larry" period), when I'm willing to bet money, he thought about it.

Re: Typing and spelling.
Shouldn't these clauses be separated by semi colons rather than full stops as they are not actually sentences?Dalcassian wrote: No space between the end of one sentence and the next. No question mark at the end of a question. Isn’t that bad? No use of the comma and no full stop at the end of a sentence. No capital letter at start of the sentence and a small i instead of ‘I’. No use of ‘ in ‘I’ll’.
As spellcheck would say - fragment consider revising!

I am an avid letter writer and, as Michael will confirm, I am also an avid texter. However I do not use text speak very often, I have predictive text on my mobile and will more often than not use the entire word rather than the text abbreviation! That said there are times when if I am in a hurry I will use text speak in an email or text message. I never, use it in a handwritten letter!
It's very easy to sit a criticise other people for their mistakes but at the end of the day get some perspective it's only spelling and grammar, it is not the end of the world!
Digger made a comment about the reason people can't spell is because they didn't go to school! I should just make the point that my sister not only went to school, she went to University and still she cannot spell! The reason for this is because schools seem to think it undermines a child's confidence to be told when they are wrong so they are happy to perpetuate the problem!

When I spoke to my daughters english teacher about my concerns regarding her bad spelling and the use of text abbreviations in her written work the teacher said it wasnt anything to worry too much about as she would grow out of it!!
Her spelling has got worse since she started secondary school and got a mobile phone.
