I see that the ladies are playing this week at Gramacho.....a very good coup for Gramacho.Will many people be going to watch?Should be on t.v. some time next week,will have to keep my eyes peeled for this.

Hi Dodger - yes, a good result for Pestana and Carvoeiro - I am flying out this evening to watch it.

I understand that entry to watch is free, so if anyone has any interest it will be well worth turning up to watch

If you find out what TV channel it is on can you let me know

So the farmers whos animals and crops are dying from lack of water can stand and watch load of silly women knocking balls around on the only pieces of GREEN grass can they?

you can always rely on eco to rear his ugly head!Golfers spend a vast amount in the algarve,they are involved in the chain which buys the farmers produce which in turn gives the farmer a livelyhood.Go on eco,rise to the bait......

Completely agree with Eco. Did you know that the water a golf course spends in a year can maintein a 15.000 town for the same period, a year.
The inner Algarve and Andalucia´s towns are suffering water restrictions but yes, but you expats and your expensive hobbies there is water, not fot the natives.

Eco - you really do make me laugh. If YOU do not agree with it then it is wrong. I would be fascinated in how you justify living in two countries and having two houses -

I hope neither of them are built of concrete (extremely environmentally damaging)

I hope that you do not use an aeroplane to travel uneccesarily between the two (as above)

I hope that you have not duplicated household appliances (especially fridges with inherent CFC and disposal problems)

Open your eyes and realise that we are ALL part of the problem. I have said it before, but your rants just turn off anyone who may have had some sympathy for your causes, and therefore achieve very little.

here we go again! those farmers must be the same ones that got thousands of euros from the EC council to modernise their farms and instead bought new cars and refurbish their houses

let's face it what is the main industry in the algarve?

YES!!!!! TOURISM!!!!!

if the golf courses are not kept green then there's no tourists, and if there's no tourists you're all doomed, and you can't even afford to come here and complaint about it, think about it, farms never sustained algarve's economy so stop moaning and accept the facts, you either have water for a few sheep and pigs to keep a few farmers happy, or you keep the golf courses green and keep all the region happy?

How about agriculture Vic.......crop growing and fresh veg? Even 'tinned veg' has to start off with 'fresh' veg doesn't it?
As you can see.......I haven't the slightest interest in Golf...shameful

Having just returned from a very pleasant 2 weeks in Carvoeiro, I can assure you that not all the courses are "green". The VDM is in a very sorry state including the greens and the general maitenence of the course including the palm trees that look as if they haven't been maintained for years was poor to say the least. Now if there's going to be a war or words over the golf courses, what about the local council and slide and splash both of which were had sprinklers on large areas of grass and flower beds as we left CVO yesterday morning. portugeezer, that can't be right. As there haven't always been golf courses in the Algarve, but there have been people for a long time, there Must have been something else that sustained the economy aka provided a living.
Also your argument only works if all tourists are golfers.

Graham,the ladies golf is usually on sky sports on the tuesday following the end of the competition so next Tue,usually around 8.00pm ish.

i have to agree with those who are more than concerned about water consumption inthe algarve....we have no mains water only a borehole 65 metres but now within 150 metres of the house we have the water company sinking a 200 metre borehole which is one of 10 to be sunk in the area..the water will then be taken to alcantrilha and used for human use.

as has been mentioned above,.....a golf course uses a VAST amount of water..and franknlky i dont care how much "tourism " they bring here..when there is no water and its all gone there will be no tourism...if you see this weeks algarve resident you will read of the desertification of southern portugal.

sadly graham I hope you put pressure on your golf course managements to builds desalination plants a.s.a.p.

without such action you may find one day algarve farmers arriving and ploughing up your courses as a mark of revenge.
