Thiefs at the beaches?
I have heared in the news, that big groups come to the beaches and steal money and other expensive things. But it was in Lissabon. Do you think that the groups also come to Carvoeiro? We are a little bit afraid, because we will come in the summer! Thanks a lot

yes that happened in lisbon as you said, i think everyone is aware of this situation the police inclusive, the main culprits on the robery where illegal imigrants that live on lisbon area and most of them have been arrested, i don't think that they'll be on the streets so soon specially in carvoeiro, a good way of keeping thieves away is not taking to much money or valuables to the beach, don't worry i'm sure you'll enjoy your holidays
I dont think that there is much risk at the beach but there are walk-in thieves about who go into tourist villas and steal. They know that tourists have plenty of cash and easily saleable things such as cameras. If you are by the pool make sure that you do not leave valuables lying about in the villa - if there is a safe use it. Also when you leave there villa make sure that windows and shutters are closed.
There is no real personal danger but theft like this can spoil your holiday.

there was a criminologist on TV yesterday talking about what happened on Carcavelos beach last Friday. Apparently, kids from the poor suburbs of Lisbon, many of them black some illegal immigrants, chose the busy bank holiday Friday to demonstrate their dissatisfaction of the system by running wild amongst Lisbon’s ruling classes on their day off. Some people did have things stolen, but very few, and I don’t think the foreign tourists need worry themselves about it.

I hope a forum friend who doesn't post won't mind my telling you this little gem?
Some years ago his wife was threatened by a mugger on her way home from shopping...a fiesty lady she wasn't fazed by this and simply hit him over the head with a turnip purchased at the supermarket!
Gutsy lady..wonderful stuff
moral of this tale I suppose...always carry something hard on your person in case of emergency....preferably a turnip
