Yes - it has been compulsory since (I think) 26th March and they must be EN471 (standard) compliant.

One car hires comment won't stop the GNR from giving you a fine if the car hire company are mis informed (or can't be asked!). We are flying out Wednesday, can someone please define the law regarding these jackets...thanks. Mike

these things cost about £5 from your local builders merchant - and can be rolled up to fit in a pocket - just take one with you! (and take it back with you....they are very useful in this country too.....)

Seems to me the only doubt is the date when these are required - I have checked on the DGV website and there is nothing to clarify whether the applicable date was March or very soon to be - BUT I would not trust a hire company necessarily - for the sake of the cost involved it isnt worth the risk and as has been said we can see them as no bad thing to have anyway.

I know I will sound like a "wuss" to some but I have got a full set of 4 in my car (just in case passengers may need them as well).

Good thinking, Iane but probably a set of 5 would be prudent, at rps price,

Fair point HP but the fifth person would probably be my 13 year old and somedays I'm not too kindly disposed to that one
