Weather

Post by SWP »

Hello all,

I'm visiting Carvoeiro in June with two small children and have now started to fret about all the talk about lack of rain and droughts.

Will this drought lead to the terrible forest fires that were all over the news in 2003? Were the tourist developments threatened last time? Was the air quality bad enough to affect health?

I've had a look at the fire forum, but that just makes me fret even more! :?

HI SWP - I will leave the comments on the likelihood of fires (and the abilities to fight them) to others who are far more qualified - however, we wew in Carvoeiro for pretty much all of last summer and could see the fires from our terrace (quite a way away) BUT there appeared to be enough natural fire breaks that we were not concerned that the fires would spread to heavily touristed areas.

Also, whilst the sky was a very strange grey / tint of orange colour, my family (including two very young children) did not seem to suffer any ill effects from anything in the air - in fact the only problem we really encountered was the amount of ash everywhere necessitating frequent washing of everything.

This is not to say that the risk of fires should be underestimated, and the damage to crops, farming and livelihoods was very serious indeed for those that bore the brunt of it, but we will be there again all summer and I hope that your worries will not put you off.

Thank you very much for replying Graham. I am still worried but I am hoping the rain will come - I keep seeing rain on the long term forecasts that mysteriously dissappear nearer the time.

I'll just keep an eye on the situation I guess.

Just found this on one of my favorite UK weather sites. I think this is the first time (tis for me anyway) you can select a 7 day forecast for Carvoeiro (as against Faro) which includes UV and sunburn expectation. Mike, Chislehurst.
