To Redenencia or not
I suspect when the time arrive we will probably opt for Resedencia as well - but that's at least 5 years away and a lot can happen in the meantime. Blair might have us at war with The Isle of Wight or some other 'wicked' democracy by then.
As for the cars being used in Portugal on UK plates - the question of their legitimacy will probably never be known. As far as I know there is only one UK Insurance company who will provide you with permanent cover in Europe.
MOT's for now can be secured by fair means or foul but that is about to end with the introduction of a new and onerous process. The renewal of a tax disc is rightfully becoming more difficult to dodge - with an automatic fine to the registered keeper if it is not renewed on time. Will those who choose to take the risk drive back to the UK every year to have their vehicles tested - I don't think so but their options are very limited.
So for now - everytime you walk past an older UK registered car (01 or 51 or more) in Portugal just cast a glance at the tax disc and judge for yourself.

kteee - to renew your tax disc you must produce your insurance and Mot - although there is nothing to stop you cancelling the insurance the following day.
It is claimed that here in the UK 38% of cars on the roads are uninsured - that is not helped by there being no visible proof of insurance on the vehicle - whereas in Portugal (and some other European countries) it is a legal requirement to display your insurance 'stamp' on the windscreen.
Now there's something the UK can learn from their Euro counterparts......

You are absolutely correct - so they put the onus on you.
Your policy will contain clause(s) that require you to comply with the statutory requirements and if you do not and have the misfortune to make a claim - your claim is quite likely to be rejected.
Insurance companies lost their 'charitable' status some time ago.
