CAN ANYBODY HELP "SCOOBY DOO"
CAN ANYBODY HELP FIND "SCOOBY" A HOME IN CARVOEIRO
I was lucky enough to visit Carvoeiro for a holiday in October 2004 and absolutely loved it
Whilst I was there a local street dog jumped in to a Restaurant I was eating at and found my table and sat down beside me. I realised immediately he was hurt as he was not putting one of his forelegs to the ground. I was not able to discover what was wrong, as he was promptly told to leave by a waiter.
I could not get this dog off my mind and had a look for him after finishing my meal, but was not able to find him.
The next day, my mother who was on holiday with me went into Carvoeiro and spotted the dog on the beach, still on 3 legs. She called me and I came down in the car to fetch him. I was hoping he had a cut pad and a visit to the vets would put him on the road to recovery. Unfortunetly, the foot turned out to be fractured and we were then left with the dilemma of trying to find somewhere for him to stay whilst he recovered from the break.
Luckily I found a great kennels in Logoa run by an English lady called Jan, who agreed to take him in until he was mended. The plan was then to release him back into Carvoeiro. We returned home, very much poorer! and "Scooby" remained in kennels to recover.
To cut along story short, his recovery was slow and meanwhile we decided it would be terribly unfair on him and Jan to just release him to the streets once mended. He has therefore had all his injections including rabies, been microchipped and issued with a passport. Having found him and taken responsibility for him, the only course of action left for me is to arrange to bring him to England to live (he will be allowed to travel from June 1st). However, in a last ditch attempt, I am hoping that somebody in Portugal will be able to offer this lovely affable chap a home in his homeland and save him from the distress of coming to England to fit into a lifestyle that is not really suited to dogs!
If anybody is looking for a medium size 2 1/2 year old tan dog - with a fab temprement, very well behaved, clean indoors and in kennels, loveable and loyal and feels that they would be able to offer him a good life PLEASE contact me via email: lorraine.jenkyn@btinternet.com
He is fully recovered and ready for a home life, he is a local dog, he justs needs a secure and loving home.

We also were on holiday in October and saw Scooby running about with his broken paw. The first time we saw him he seemed to be with some people but when we saw him next day he was on his own. Like when you first saw him he was being shoo'd away from outside a restaurant and he ran way. We looked for him every day after that but there was no sign of him. Obviously he had been lucky enough to have been found by you and taken to a vet.
Unfortunately I cannot help you with a home for Scooby as we have already brought a street dog back from Carvoeiro 2 years ago and went through the same process you are going through with Scooby. (Pets passport etc).
I know what you are saying about finding a home for him in Portugal as being a more preferable option but I can assure you through my own experience that the dog will have no problem settling in in the UK( even despite the weather) and will give you an amazing amount of love and enjoyment in return for his new home.
We come to Carvoeiro 5 or 6 times a year and never get used to seeing the dogs on the streets although I think some get by better than others .
Like you however I cannot bear to see any animal in pain or suffering and when we saw Scooby with his broken paw intended to take him to the APAA to care for him .They do really good work and need support continuously as they also send dogs back to the UK for rehoming.
Anyway good luck with finding a home whether it is in the Uk or in sunny portugal

Thank you so much for your message. I tried to get hold of APAA whilst in Portugal without success and since being home have again tried including faxing them, without success. They were my inital hope, in at least staying with them until I get him back to England. As kennelling him is so expensive and of course I have the expense of getting him home.
Its comforting to know that your dog has settled to British life. Can you tell me how you got him home - did you fly him etc. Where did you buy your carrier from and approximate how much it all cost. Any advice on the best way to do things would be most welcome.
Its great to know that others have done the same.
He is a smashing dog and I would like to have him at home with me, but I already have 2 horses, cats and other dogs and not entirely sure how much time I will be able to afford him.
But, if the right home is not available for him in Carvoeiro rest assured I will bring him home.

Fortunately for us everything was organised by APAA(although paid by us) including the carrier etc. He was flown to Heathrow and we picked him up from there. Unfortunately we live in Scotland so had to drive down and then drivehim all the way back as at that time no animals could be flown in to Scottish airport under PETS passport.
I think the overall cost was about £500. It certainly wasn't cheap as like you we supported him throughout his period before he could travel by giving donations to APAA and paying all his vet bills. (turned out he had an illness that had to be treated before he could travel)
but to be honest he is a beautiful dog and was well worth it.
Linda Pixley at APAA I'm sure would help organise for you if you can get hold of her.
